A Raspberry Pi livestream can disconnect because the upload path is unstable, the encoder is sending an unsuitable or inconsistent stream, or the Pi’s capture-and-encoding process has stopped supplying usable video. A disconnect alone does not identify the cause. Start by recording the exact stream-health warning in YouTube Studio, then compare the encoder’s output with the network and local logs.
Start with the YouTube Studio stream-health warning
Open the stream’s health or status details in YouTube Studio and note the exact warning and when it appears. YouTube’s documentation identifies possible audio, video, bitrate, frame-rate, codec, keyframe-frequency, and stream-consistency problems; one diagnostic describes YouTube not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. That message is a symptom, not proof that your internet provider is at fault. See Google’s LiveStreams documentation and its configuration-issues guidance.
Keep the warning alongside the time of the interruption. It gives you a way to compare YouTube’s view of the incoming stream with what the Pi’s encoder and network were doing at that moment.
Check whether the upload connection can sustain the stream
Run an upload-speed test with the Pi connected in its usual streaming location. If interruptions tend to happen at particular times, test during those periods too. Compare the sustainable upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate, and consider other network traffic and fluctuations. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and selecting a quality that is reliable for the available connection; it does not establish a universal safety-margin percentage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s published H.264 encoder recommendations include these examples. They are encoder bitrate figures, not guarantees that a household connection at the same speed will remain stable.
| Output | YouTube’s minimum | YouTube’s recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These values come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance. Use the row for your actual resolution and frame rate; a faster speed test does not by itself establish that the connection is stable throughout a stream.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic comparison
If the Pi is on Wi-Fi, temporarily test it over wired Ethernet and compare the results under similar conditions. A Cat 6 cable is one practical option for this test, not a guaranteed fix. If wired streaming is stable but Wi-Fi is not, investigate the wireless path. Ethernet will not solve inadequate ISP upload capacity, router problems, incorrect encoder settings, or a capture process that stops. Raspberry Pi documents network video streaming in its camera software guide.
Verify the encoder’s stream settings
Compare the settings your encoder actually outputs with YouTube’s current guidance. The official recommendations can change, so consult YouTube’s encoder settings page when configuring or retesting.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Codec: For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Confirm your specific encoder and workflow produce the codec you selected.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a bitrate appropriate for the output resolution and frame rate, and for the connection’s tested capacity.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it must not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate and resolution: Check that the configured output matches the intended stream and the corresponding bitrate recommendation.
- Audio: Confirm that audio is present and uses a format supported by the chosen ingestion path.
- Ingestion security: Use RTMPS where your encoder workflow supports it.
Test with representative motion and audio before returning to a long stream. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Check that the Pi is still capturing and encoding
A healthy network cannot deliver a stream the Pi is no longer producing. During an interruption, inspect the streaming application’s logs and confirm that the encoder process remains active, the camera or other source is still available, and the output settings—including bitrate—match what you intended.

Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation covers video streaming and H.264 bitrate controls. It notes that on Raspberry Pi 5, the low-latency option reduces encoding latency but slightly reduces coding efficiency. That is a setting detail to consider when reviewing a Pi 5 configuration, not evidence that the model itself causes disconnects.

- YouTube reports insufficient incoming video while the encoder process stays alive: Compare upload stability with the encoder’s output continuity and configuration. The warning alone does not distinguish a network fault from an encoder-output problem.
- The encoder exits or camera capture fails: Investigate the local software, source availability, power, and logs around the failure.
- Wired Ethernet is stable while Wi-Fi is not: Focus next on the wireless connection and its conditions at the streaming location.
- The warning points to bitrate, frame rate, codec, audio, or keyframes: Check those settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and retest.
These are diagnostic inferences from YouTube’s listed health and configuration categories and Raspberry Pi’s streaming documentation, not guaranteed fixes. Without the Pi model, software or command, network measurements, logs, and exact health message, the specific root cause cannot be established.

What to collect if the cause is still unclear
Before changing hardware, gather the details that let someone trace the interruption through the whole chain:
- Raspberry Pi model and camera or other video source.
- Operating system, streaming application and version, or the full encoder command with the stream key removed.
- Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval.
- Whether the Pi uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, plus upload-test results from its usual streaming location.
- Encoder logs around the interruption and the exact YouTube Studio stream-health warning with its timing.
Those details help separate a network interruption from an encoder, capture, or configuration failure; a disconnection alone is not a reason to replace the board, camera, or power supply.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping a Pi running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
