To run a YouTube livestream continuously with OBS, use OBS as the encoder and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create and control the stream. Connect OBS with the server URL and stream key from YouTube, start the encoder, confirm the preview, and start the scheduled event in Live Control Room if prompted. For a genuine 24/7 broadcast, plan separately for network interruptions and recording: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording if you need a complete archive.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current general eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- OBS installed and configured as the encoder.
- A stable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for your stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- Enough local storage for a separate recording if you need to retain the whole broadcast.
The YouTube Help guidance checked on 2026-10-03 is general guidance, not an India-specific 24/7 procedure. It does not establish special Indian eligibility, ISP, router, legal, tax, or monetization requirements for this workflow.
How do I connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room?
- Check channel eligibility. Confirm channel verification and check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The general minimum age in YouTube’s eligibility guidance is 16.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Open the Stream tab, then create a stream or select one whose settings you want to reuse.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
- Set up the OBS feed. Choose the resolution, frame rate, encoder and bitrate appropriate to your content and measured upload capacity. Use audio and video motion similar to the real programme when testing; a static test image may not reveal problems that appear during movement or sound.
- Start OBS and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check that the preview appears in Live Control Room and that stream health shows no unresolved warnings. If the event is scheduled, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready.
- Monitor the live session. Keep Live Control Room open for stream health, duration, errors and real-time viewer metrics. Also confirm that any local recording file is being created and continues to grow.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The channel’s server URL and key belong to its own stream setup; do not substitute details from another channel or event.
Choose encoder settings and internet headroom
There is no single bitrate that fits every 24/7 stream. The right encoder settings depend on the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, the encoder and content, and the stability of your upload path. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance rather than guessing a universal number.

- Keep the stream’s total bitrate within the upload bandwidth available to the streaming computer.
- YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, if the configured total bitrate is B, plan for measured upload capacity of at least B ÷ 0.8, rather than treating B as the full capacity of the connection.
- Test the real mix of video motion and audio before relying on a long broadcast. Watch for warnings and dropped or interrupted delivery during the test.
- A wired, stable connection can reduce avoidable local Wi-Fi variability, but YouTube’s general guidance does not specify an India ISP, router, or network design.
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its streaming tips recommend preparing for connection problems and testing backup-encoder failover where available. A UPS or alternate connection may be part of an individual continuity plan, but neither is a specific YouTube requirement.
Can YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to retain a complete uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.

| Recording approach | What it is suitable for | Limitation to plan around |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s automatic archive | Streams under 12 hours, where the available YouTube archive is sufficient. | For streams exceeding 12 hours, capture is not assured; it may not be captured at all. |
| Separate local recording | A complete copy when retaining a long-running broadcast matters. | Requires a recording workflow, storage capacity and a check that the recording continues during the live session. |
Enable a separate local recording in your OBS workflow and monitor the output file rather than assuming that a live feed is also being saved. An external drive is an optional way to add recording capacity; YouTube does not prescribe a particular storage device. Live Control Room can show stream health and real-time metrics, but it does not replace checking the local file. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computers and its live-stream metrics guidance.
What to monitor during a 24/7 broadcast
- Live Control Room preview and health: make sure the expected feed is present and check for errors or warnings.
- OBS connection: watch for a disconnected encoder or interrupted upload; a stream can break if connectivity is disrupted.
- Local recording: verify that the output file exists and is still growing if you need a full archive.
- Audience access: confirm the stream’s visibility and event settings match the audience you intend to reach.
- Duration and metrics: use Live Control Room’s status and real-time metrics to spot changes while the stream is running.
Copyright and content checks for a continuous stream
Before leaving a programme running around the clock, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, images and other material in it. A stream being prerecorded or continuously looped does not itself establish that the creator may broadcast the material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for the specific content; the setup guidance cited here does not define a blanket exception for 24/7 broadcasts.
