Why Does My Netflix Keep Buffering on My TV?

Netflix buffering on a TV usually means the connection between Netflix and the television is too slow or unstable—not that the TV screen itself is failing. The cause may be weak Wi-Fi, household congestion, an ISP problem, outdated software, a malfunctioning Netflix app, an unsupported device, or an HDMI/display-chain fault that only looks like buffering.

The fastest diagnosis is to check Netflix’s network connection on the affected TV, compare other streaming apps and devices, then test a restart, Ethernet, software updates, and the Netflix app before buying new equipment or upgrading your internet plan.

Quick fixes to try first

  1. Open Netflix and select Get Help → Check your Network.
  2. Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other heavy internet use.
  3. Fully restart the TV or streaming device—not just standby.
  4. Restart the modem and router.
  5. Try Ethernet, or temporarily move the router closer to the TV.
  6. Update the TV, streaming device, and Netflix app, then sign out and back in.

Do these in order. Each test provides evidence about where the problem is, so you can avoid replacing a TV or buying a faster internet plan unnecessarily.

First, identify what kind of problem you have

“Buffering” is often used for several different playback faults:

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
What you see What it may indicate
Playback pauses and a loading spinner appears An unstable or insufficient network connection
The title takes a long time to start A slow connection, congestion, or an app/device problem
The picture becomes blurry or pixelated Netflix is lowering quality because available bandwidth is fluctuating
The app is frozen or stuck loading The Netflix app, TV software, or device may be unresponsive
The image skips, flickers, or distorts without a loading spinner A possible HDMI, receiver, TV-port, or streaming-device problem

Netflix’s buffering guidance focuses on the network, while its stuttering and distortion guidance also recommends checking the HDMI connection and display hardware. See Netflix’s connection troubleshooting and its TV and device playback guidance.

Does every streaming app buffer?

Pattern Most likely direction
Netflix and other apps buffer Wi-Fi, router, ISP service, household congestion, or the TV’s network hardware
Only Netflix buffers The Netflix app, device software, account or profile settings, title-specific playback, or a Netflix-specific network route
Only one title buffers A title-specific playback problem; try another title before changing your network
Only one TV buffers That TV’s Wi-Fi reception, software, app, network adapter, or HDMI chain

Different streaming services can use different servers and network paths, so other apps working does not prove that Netflix’s route is healthy. Conversely, if every service fails, replacing or reinstalling Netflix is unlikely to be the first useful step.

Check the connection Netflix is actually using

Run Netflix’s in-app network test

  1. Open Netflix and go to the home screen.
  2. Press the Back button on the remote.
  3. If the menu appears at the top, move left to the profile icon.
  4. Select Get Help → Check your Network.
  5. If the menu is on the left, choose Get Help at the bottom.
  6. If Get Help is missing, look under Settings.

Let the test finish. It checks whether the TV or connected device can reach the internet and Netflix, rather than merely showing that the router is switched on. Netflix documents this path at help.netflix.com/en/node/230.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Fast.com at the time buffering occurs

On a phone or computer connected to the same network, open Fast.com. Wait for the result, then repeat the test once or twice if the numbers vary. Run it while the TV is buffering, if possible. Netflix recommends Fast.com because it measures the connection to Netflix’s service network and can provide useful evidence when speaking with an ISP.

Understand Netflix’s speed recommendations

Target quality Resolution Netflix recommendation
HD 720p 3 Mbps or higher
Full HD 1080p 5 Mbps or higher
Ultra HD 4K 15 Mbps or higher

These are Netflix’s recommendations for the selected quality, not a universal internet-plan requirement. A household watching several streams while gaming, making video calls, downloading games, or backing up files needs additional capacity.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus with Voice Remote - 4K & HDR10+

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

They are also sustained-speed guidelines, not guarantees. A connection that briefly reaches 100 Mbps can still buffer if it repeatedly drops packets, loses contact with Netflix, becomes congested in the evening, or delivers poor Wi-Fi to the TV. A fast test on a phone does not prove that the TV receives the same performance.

As a rough interpretation:

  • If Netflix’s TV test is slow and all apps buffer, investigate the home network, ISP, or a possible outage.
  • If the TV test is adequate but Netflix alone fails, focus on the app, device software, account, title, or Netflix-specific route.
  • If the phone is fast but the TV is slow, suspect distance, walls, interference, TV Wi-Fi hardware, or TV software.
  • If only 4K titles buffer, investigate sustained bandwidth, 4K equipment compatibility, and quality settings.

Restart the TV or streaming device completely

A remote-control power press may put some TVs into standby without clearing their current network or app state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Unplug the TV, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, game console, cable box, or other streaming device.
  2. Press the device’s physical power button once and wait one minute, or leave it unplugged for three minutes.
  3. Reconnect it, turn it on, and test Netflix.

This procedure is recommended in Netflix’s device troubleshooting guidance.

Restart the modem and router

  1. Turn off or unplug the TV or streaming device.
  2. Unplug the modem and router.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug in the modem first and wait until its connection lights stabilize.
  5. Plug in the separate router, if you have one.
  6. Wait for the network to reconnect, then turn on the TV and test Netflix.

Some equipment takes several minutes to establish service. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it while it is still negotiating the connection. A restart can clear a temporary connection state or renew the WAN connection, but it does not prove that the router is defective.

Improve Wi-Fi before replacing equipment

  • Move the router and TV closer together temporarily. If the problem disappears, distance or obstruction is significant.
  • Place the router in an open, elevated position rather than on the floor or inside furniture.
  • Keep it away from appliances and other wireless equipment.
  • If your router shows separate Wi-Fi bands, test the TV on the other available band.
  • Pause large downloads, backups, updates, and other high-bandwidth activity.
  • Test at the time buffering normally occurs, especially if the problem is worse in the evening.

Netflix recommends closer router placement, distance from wireless devices and appliances, and an open position. See Netflix’s Wi-Fi advice.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic test

If the TV or streaming device has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and test Netflix again. Ethernet is not necessarily faster than strong modern Wi-Fi, and it cannot increase your ISP plan’s bandwidth. Its diagnostic value is that it removes the TV-to-router wireless link from the equation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If wired playback is smooth but Wi-Fi playback buffers, the likely issue is Wi-Fi signal quality, interference, or local wireless congestion. Only then should you consider improving coverage with better router placement, a mesh system, or another access point.

Update the device and Netflix app

Update the TV or streaming device firmware, then update Netflix where the platform allows it. Menu labels vary by brand, model year, region, and firmware version, but common examples include:

  • Roku: Settings → System → System update.
  • Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates.
  • Google TV/Android TV: Settings → System → About → System update; app updates are handled through Google Play.
  • Apple TV: Settings → System → Software Updates.
  • Smart TVs: Use the manufacturer’s support or software-update menu; Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Hisense, and TCL use different labels.

Netflix identifies outdated app or device software as a cause of some connection and playback errors, including UI-115. Its guidance is available at help.netflix.com/en/node/47985.

Sign out, then sign back in

  1. Open Netflix.
  2. Press Back to open the menu.
  3. Select Get Help → Sign out.
  4. Choose Yes, then sign back in.

If the normal option is unavailable, Netflix documents this remote fallback sequence: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. It is a Netflix-documented fallback for supported devices, not a universal reset code for every television or platform.

When to reinstall or reset

Reinstalling Netflix or resetting the streaming device is more appropriate when other apps work normally but Netflix continues to freeze or buffer after network restarts, updates, and sign-out. A factory reset should be a last resort. It can remove apps, saved settings, Wi-Fi credentials, and account information, so have your Wi-Fi password and Netflix login ready.

On an older smart TV that cannot receive updates or is no longer supported, a separate supported streaming player may be a more practical alternative than replacing the television. If Netflix cannot be found in the Google Play Store or the device is marked incompatible, Netflix says the Android TV hardware may not be supported.

Check quality settings and 4K equipment

Netflix adapts picture quality to the available connection. If a manually selected quality setting causes freezing on a variable connection, return it to Auto; see Netflix’s quality settings guidance. Lowering quality can reduce bandwidth demand, but it will not repair a failing Wi-Fi link.

For 4K or HDR, the plan, title, TV, streaming device, receiver, HDMI cable, and HDMI port must support the desired format. Netflix says relevant setups may require a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 or later. A low-resolution or missing-HDR problem is not necessarily buffering.

  4. Try another HDMI port.
  5. Try another HDMI cable.
  6. Test the device on another TV, if available.

These steps follow Netflix’s documented HDMI and receiver troubleshooting at help.netflix.com/en/node/100342.

When to contact your ISP

Contact the ISP when Fast.com or Netflix’s in-app check is consistently below the relevant quality threshold, unstable, or much worse during the times you watch. Tell support:

  • Whether every device or only the TV is affected.
  • Whether the TV uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Your Fast.com result and the time it was measured.
  • Whether buffering is worse at particular times.
  • Whether restarting the modem helps temporarily.

Ask about outages, modem or gateway health, signal levels, and recurring congestion. Do not claim that Netflix is experiencing an outage without current verification; a route or ISP problem can affect Netflix even when other services work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to buy only if the tests point to it

Confirmed clue Possible purchase What it will not fix
Ethernet fixes playback A correctly sized Ethernet cable, such as those from Monoprice or Cable Matters An ISP outage, inadequate service, or a defective TV port
Wi-Fi is the confirmed weak point A better-placed router or suitable mesh system, such as Eero, Google Nest WiFi, or TP-Link Deco A failing TV network adapter or slow ISP connection
The TV app or software is unsupported A supported streaming device from Roku, Apple TV, Google TV, or Fire TV Weak Wi-Fi or an ISP problem
Sustained Netflix-path speed is inadequate for the household An ISP service review or upgrade TV-specific Wi-Fi or HDMI faults

DNS changes, VPNs, and proxy settings are not standard first-line fixes for ordinary Netflix buffering and can complicate diagnosis or create region and account problems.
