Start the lecture and watch the OBS meter for the source that should carry its audio. If it does not move, OBS is not receiving sound from that source; if it does move, trace the signal through monitoring, recording, and the YouTube encoder to find where it stops.
Trace the sound from playback to the live stream
Diagnose the first point in the signal path where sound disappears. A 24/7 schedule does not by itself call for a different first-line audio check. If the problem comes and goes, note when it starts and whether the lecture playback, selected device, or application capture changes at that moment.
- Check playback and the OBS meter. Play the lecture and confirm it has sound outside OBS. Then find the OBS source expected to capture that sound and watch its meter. A meter that does not move means the signal is not reaching that OBS source.
- If the meter does not move, check capture. Verify that the correct application or desktop device is selected and that the capture method fits how the lecture plays. A browser, an OBS media source, and another application can require different capture approaches; the exact steps also depend on your operating system. OBS documents these as distinct topics in its Knowledge Base.
- If the meter moves, test OBS monitoring. Open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties and inspect the source’s monitoring setting. Listen through the configured monitoring device, and check the source’s mute state, fader, and filters. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains monitoring and level checks.
- Make a short local recording. Listen to it before changing multiple settings. If monitoring works but the recording is silent, inspect the selected audio output or track and recording configuration; these can differ from the monitoring path.
- Check the encoder’s live output. If the local recording has sound but the YouTube stream does not, check which sources and audio tracks reach stream output, their mute and fader states, and the encoder’s output. Compare sound in the encoder or live-stream view with the local recording. That difference points toward live routing or output, though it does not establish the cause by itself.
Use the test results to narrow the cause

These are diagnostic interpretations, not confirmed causes. YouTube advises that a problem reported by one viewer may lie with that viewer’s computer or connection; reports from multiple viewers on different connections can point toward an encoder issue. Check levels without treating meter values as a fix
OBS’s older Audio Mixer Technical Details describes -20 dBFS as Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as Permitted Maximum Level, and says its peak-hold indicator remains for 20 seconds. These are descriptions of the meter, not universal targets for a lecture stream, and they do not show that a particular level caused silence. The document dates to 2022, so labels may differ in your installed OBS version.
