What the show says about Monty’s condition
The premise is stated plainly in the series’ own descriptions. Apple TV’s episode listing for “Monty’s Roar / Natural Root Pals” describes Monty as a child with cerebral palsy, and notes that Little Bill notices the dinosaur stickers on his wheelchair before the two boys play together. Prime Video’s season listing gives the same premise: Monty has cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair, and plays with Little Bill.
How the episodes explain the wheelchair
The dialogue gives the reason in simple terms. The episode “Monty’s Roar” includes this exchange, as transcribed by fan-maintained wiki pages:
- Alice tells Little Bill: “He has cerebral palsy. He uses a wheelchair.”
- She then explains: “Because, his legs don’t work the same way ours do. The wheelchair helps Monty get around.”
In “Monty Joins the Class,” Miss Murray gives a similar explanation to classmates who ask about the chair. As transcribed, she says Monty was born with cerebral palsy and is not able to walk, and that the chair is for Monty because he needs it to get around. The reader’s own question, “Why does he have a wheelchair?”, is answered in the same terms.

What the show does and does not establish
The episodes establish three things: Monty has cerebral palsy, his legs do not work the same way as other children’s, and the wheelchair helps him move around. They also show him playing with Little Bill, including dinosaur play, which is why the wheelchair appears as one part of his everyday life rather than the centre of his story.
The episodes do not go further. They do not name a specific form of cerebral palsy, describe treatment, or set out how much mobility Monty has in other settings. Those details are not part of the show’s stated premise, so an explanation should not add them. Catalog listings are reliable for the premise, but they are not medical sources, and they should not be used to describe cerebral palsy in general.

Checking the quotations
The lines above come from fan-maintained transcripts rather than official scripts. The meaning matches the episode premise, but the exact wording should be checked against the episode itself before it is quoted in print or online.
Viewers who want to explain the wheelchair to a child can use the same two points the show makes: Monty has cerebral palsy, and the chair helps him get around. Both episodes then move on to play, which is the point the series keeps returning to.
