In the Beetlejuice films, saying Beetlejuice’s name three times is the fictional rule that summons him. The story establishes how the rule works, but the available sources do not explain why the number is three or trace it to a specific folklore tradition.
What happens when you say Beetlejuice three times?
Within the films, repeating his name three times brings Beetlejuice back. Warner Bros.’ official synopsis for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice uses the same condition to describe his return: “someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times” and he comes back to cause mayhem.

The rule is fictional; it is not a real-world supernatural claim. It also remains part of the sequel’s premise, rather than being a one-off detail from the 1988 film. TIME’s account of the sequel’s plot describes Lydia invoking Beetlejuice in connection with rescuing her daughter Astrid from the Afterlife.
What does the original film say about the rule?
In an available copy of the 1988 shooting script, Betelgeuse tells Lydia: “Say my name three times. That’s all. I’ll be all yours. Then I’ll bring you over here in style.” He also says that “the rules” prevent him from simply telling her his name. The scene presents the invocation as a constraint within the story, but does not identify who set the rule or explain its design.

The script’s wording makes the mechanism clear: Lydia must say his name three times to summon him. It does not answer the separate question of why the threshold is three.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the creators choose three?
The reason has not been established in the available sources. A reviewed interview with co-creator Larry Wilson discusses the screenplay’s development but does not explain the choice of three repetitions. The National Theatre’s study guide describes the film’s development and the work of Michael McDowell, Larry Wilson, and Warren Skaaren, but does not connect the name rule to a specific folklore source.

Stories about supernatural beings and repeated names may invite comparison, but resemblance alone does not show that the filmmakers borrowed this particular rule from an identifiable tradition. The evidence supports the in-story convention; it does not establish a creator explanation or a verified folklore origin.
