It also matches the date Marvel displays for Amazing Fantasy #15, the 1962 comic that introduced Spider-Man. But the issue’s reported on-sale date was June 5, 1962—so August 1 is not the day the comic reportedly first reached shops.
Why is Spider-Man Day on August 1?
Marvel’s page for Amazing Fantasy #15 displays the date August 1, 1962, and identifies the issue as Spider-Man’s first appearance. Marvel’s 2024 Spider-Man Day announcement says fans celebrate the character’s debut on August 1 each year. That makes the annual observance consistent with the issue date Marvel shows.
There is an important qualification: Marvel’s announcement confirms the observance, but does not explain when it began or say explicitly that August 1 was chosen because of the comic’s issue date. The date connection is clear; the origin of the observance is not established by that announcement.
Did Amazing Fantasy #15 come out in June or August 1962?
The two months refer to different dates associated with the issue. Marvel’s listing gives August 1, 1962, and the Library of Congress catalog describes the material as published in Amazing Fantasy, no. 15, August 1962. RTVE reports that a Library of Congress record gives June 5, 1962, as the comic’s on-sale date. The Library of Congress page cited here confirms the August issue context but does not itself display June 5, so that specific sale date should be attributed to RTVE’s report.

Comic issue dates and the dates an issue went on sale are not necessarily the same. Here, the difference helps explain the apparent mismatch: the celebration aligns with the issue date shown by Marvel, while the reported date the comic went on sale is earlier.
Is Spider-Man Day celebrated on the wrong day?
“Probably the wrong day” works as a playful hook if “wrong” means “not the reported on-sale date.” It would be misleading to call August 1 a proven mistake. It is the date Marvel currently promotes for Spider-Man Day and the date displayed on its issue page; the June 5 date is the earlier on-sale date reported by RTVE. Those are different conventions, not necessarily competing claims about one date.
Nor should June 5 be described as Spider-Man’s officially established birthday. It is the reported sale date of the comic featuring his first appearance, not a documented birth date for the fictional character.

Spider-Man first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15, published by Marvel in 1962. The Library of Congress catalog record describes original artwork associated with the issue, while Marvel’s issue page identifies it as the character’s first appearance. The later annual celebration commemorates that debut; it does not mark a separate event in Spider-Man’s story.
