Disney’s Pocahontas remains controversial because it turns a colonial encounter into a romance and a story of cultural understanding, while the historical record is more complicated. The criticism is also about whose history the film tells—and whose name it uses.

What is the controversy about?

The title refers to Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas, which has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of Pocahontas’s story, as summarized by IMDb’s listing of a CBR article. The issue is not simply whether particular scenes match the historical record. The film gives a colonial history the shape of a romance, with Pocahontas and English colonist John Smith at its emotional center.

That approach can make a violent, unequal encounter seem like a mutual misunderstanding resolved through personal affection. It also attaches that version of events to the name of a real Indigenous person. The result is a memorable story, but not a reliable biography or a substitute for Indigenous history and historical scholarship.

What does the historical account say about Pocahontas and John Smith?

TIME’s historical explainer, drawing on historian Camilla Townsend, says Pocahontas was probably about 10 or 12 when she met the English colonists. It also says her relationship with Smith was probably not romantic. Those qualifications matter: they reflect a historian’s interpretation of an incomplete record, not certainty about every detail of her life.

The same account treats Smith’s story of Pocahontas rescuing him as uncertain and reports Townsend’s skepticism about his account. The familiar rescue-and-romance narrative should therefore be understood as part of Disney’s fictionalized adaptation, not a settled account of what happened. For further historical context, Townsend’s book Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma, identified by TIME, offers a historian’s interpretation; it should not be presented as a single Indigenous consensus.

Why did people connected to the film object?

Historical accuracy was not the only concern. In a 1995 report, the Los Angeles Times identified Shirley “Little Dove” Custalow McGowan as a key consultant on the film and quoted her objection to telling this story under Pocahontas’s name: “This is a nice film–if it didn’t carry the name ‘Pocahontas,’ ” (Los Angeles Times).

The Washington Post also reported objections from people who said the film departed from their understanding of Powhatan history (Washington Post). Together, these contemporary reports document specific criticism as well as support for the film. They do not establish that all Powhatan people, or all Native people, hold the same view.

How should viewers approach the film?

  • Separate character from person. Disney’s romantic heroine is a fictionalized version of a historical person whose life cannot be reduced to the film’s plot.
  • Notice the framing. A story about colonization told chiefly as a romance can shift attention away from power, conflict and the perspectives of the people whose land was being colonized.
  • Look beyond the adaptation. Use historical scholarship and Indigenous perspectives to learn more, while recognizing that the sources cited here do not settle every disputed episode or represent a complete Indigenous history.
