After Joel’s death, Ellie wants to pursue his killers to Seattle. “The Path” makes that desire collide with a harder question: should Jackson authorize revenge on behalf of the town?
What happens in “The Path”?
The episode begins in the aftermath of the infected attack on Jackson. Tommy tends to Joel’s body as the town reckons with losses beyond Joel himself. Ellie wakes in the hospital in acute distress, but the story soon moves forward three months: Jackson is rebuilding, and Ellie is physically healed without having worked through her grief.
At Joel’s house, Ellie takes his gun and breaks down among his clothes. The scene gives her loss a private, physical reality before the episode turns to what she plans to do about it.
Why does Ellie want to go to Seattle?
Dina tells Ellie that she recognized members of the group responsible for the attack and knows where they came from. Their WLF mark connects them to the Washington Liberation Front, a faction based in Seattle. Ellie wants Jackson to send a team after Abby and the others.
#1 Best Overall
Dina pushes back on the timing and the cost: Jackson has only recently begun recovering, and it could not have mounted a pursuit while the town was still dealing with the attack. The disagreement is not simply about whether Ellie has a reason to seek the attackers. It is about whether the community should spend its people and resources pursuing them.
What does Jackson’s debate add to the revenge story?
The episode’s public conflict asks whether revenge can be authorized collectively, rather than treated as Ellie’s private choice alone. In his review, Matt Goldberg reads the town-hall scene as raising the question of whether a community can ordain revenge. That is one critical interpretation, not the only possible reading of the scene.
Rank #2
By giving Jackson time to debate, mourn and rebuild, “The Path” delays the action of a pursuit story. Goldberg argues that this grief-centered approach gives the characters room to respond to Joel’s death and lets the television adaptation do more than reproduce an action beat from the game. The pacing makes the consequences of a mission part of the story before Ellie and Dina set out.
Who are the WLF and the Seraphites?
The WLF
The WLF, or Washington Liberation Front, is the Seattle-based faction identified by the mark associated with the attackers. Dina’s recognition of that mark gives Ellie a lead and points the story toward Seattle.

The Seraphites
The episode also introduces the Seraphites as a separate faction. They are not the same group as the WLF; their presence signals that Seattle’s conflict involves more than the people Ellie is pursuing. “The Path” introduces them without making them the focus of Jackson’s decision.
How does the episode portray Ellie and Dina?
The official companion listing describes the episode as following Ellie and Tommy as they pick up the pieces, weighing the town’s judgment about justice, and moving Ellie and Dina’s relationship into its next stage. Dina is both a source of information and a person willing to challenge Ellie’s plan. Their Seattle-bound decision therefore grows out of more than shared momentum: the episode has shown disagreement, grief and a town divided over what should happen next.
