How Strands hints work

Strands hides theme-related words in a letter grid. Trace letters in adjacent cells horizontally, vertically, or diagonally; a cell cannot be used twice in one word. The spangram connects opposite sides of the grid and points to the theme.

According to a research paper describing the game, three valid guesses that are not solution words prompt a hint highlighting the letters of a hidden word. You can play NYT Strands on desktop or mobile through the NYT Games site.
