Círdan the Shipwright is an ancient Elf in Middle-earth, played by Ben Daniels in Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. His defining craft is shipbuilding, but his importance reaches beyond the series: Tolkien’s later history connects him to the fight against Sauron, the Elven Ring Narya, and the departure from Middle-earth at the Grey Havens.
Who is Círdan in Season 2?
Círdan is one of the oldest and wisest Elves in Middle-earth. Showrunner J.D. Payne described him to TIME as “the oldest of all known elves in Middle-earth” during the story’s period, adding that he had lived so long “he had a beard.” The beard is an unusual marker in Tolkien’s depiction of Elves and underlines how long Círdan has endured.
Ben Daniels portrays him in Season 2. Amazon says the cast consulted Tolkien’s books and other sources while developing their characters, but its Season 2 feature does not attribute a specific interpretation of Círdan to Daniels or another cast member.
Why is he called the Shipwright?
“Shipwright” refers to Círdan’s association with making and sailing ships. In Tolkien’s wider story, the Grey Havens are the point from which Elves depart Middle-earth across the sea. Círdan’s name and role therefore connect him with the passage between Middle-earth and the West, as well as with the people who remain there.

His screen appearance gives viewers a character whose long life links the series’ Second Age setting to later events familiar from The Lord of the Rings. Amazon describes the series as taking place thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; that distance matters when distinguishing what Season 2 depicts from what Tolkien’s later chronology tells us.
What does Círdan do in Tolkien’s later history?
These are book-history points, not a summary of scenes confirmed in Season 2. TIME’s account of Círdan’s history says he fights Sauron alongside Gil-galad. After the battle at Mount Doom, Círdan and Elrond urge Isildur to destroy the One Ring. Isildur does not do so, setting up the Ring’s survival into the later story.

Círdan also appears in person at the Grey Havens in The Lord of the Rings, greeting the company as its members depart Middle-earth. TIME describes this as his sole in-person appearance in the main narrative of The Lord of the Rings. His significance is thus larger than his page time: he is a witness to events spanning the Second and Third Ages.
What is Círdan’s ring?
Círdan is associated with Narya, the Ring of Fire, one of the Three Elven Rings. TIME’s guide to the rings says Círdan wears Narya and eventually gives it to Gandalf. In the book tradition as summarized there, Narya supports its bearer’s labor and helps rekindle hope in a weary world.

The series’ treatment of the rings is an adaptation, not a scene-by-scene reproduction of the books. TIME’s explainer compares the show through Season 2, Episode 5 with Tolkien’s books and letters, and notes differences between them. Keep the distinction clear: Círdan’s later association with Narya is Tolkien lore; it should not be presented as an event Season 2 has shown unless the episode itself confirms it.

The Rings of Power adapts a Second Age story using Tolkien sources, while its narrative and chronology do not simply reproduce every detail of the books. Amazon’s Season 2 feature notes that cast members consulted Tolkien’s other books and sources, but that does not make every later book event part of the show’s on-screen story.

- Miniatures Pack
- Series fact: Ben Daniels plays Círdan in Season 2, and Payne’s age description concerns Círdan in the show’s story period.
- Book-history fact: Círdan’s battles with Sauron, counsel to Isildur, later connection to Narya, and presence at the Grey Havens are reported as Tolkien lore.
- Adaptation caution: A book event may inform the character’s background without having happened on screen in Season 2.
Amazon’s official overview identifies The Rings of Power as a Second Age series set thousands of years before the better-known stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: Amazon’s Season 2 feature.
