Ocellus—also called Species 64—attacks a Xenomorph in Alien: Earth while controlling engineer Shmuel’s body. The move may give nearby humans an opening, but it does not prove the creature is trying to save them. “Antihero” is a compelling way to read the moment, not a confirmed account of its motives.
Who is the eye-like alien in Alien: Earth?
T. Ocellus, or Species 64, is an eye-like parasite that takes over biological hosts through the eye socket, according to Unanswered’s August 19, 2026 guide, updated September 1, 2026. The guide describes the creature controlling engineer Shmuel’s body in episode 5.
Why does T. Ocellus attack a Xenomorph?
In the episode account summarized by Unanswered, T. Ocellus attacks a Xenomorph while using Shmuel’s body. That is the observed action; the creature’s reason for doing it is not established by the available reporting.
| Reading | What the episode action supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Self-preservation or competition | The creature attacks another dangerous organism, a move consistent with protecting itself or competing for survival. | Its precise goal is not confirmed. |
| Intentional protection of humans | The attack may create an opportunity for people nearby. | An incidental benefit is not proof that T. Ocellus chose to help humans. |
Of these interpretations, self-preservation or competition is the safer reading. Unanswered’s guide likewise says the clearest explanation is self-defense and that evidence of a human-protective motive is absent. The label “antihero” captures the apparent outcome of the attack, not a settled moral position or alliance.

Was the eye alien trying to warn Chibuzo?
The glass-tapping scene is also open to interpretation. Unanswered indirectly attributes to showrunner Noah Hawley the explanation that the tapping distracted Chibuzo while another parasite escaped. Because the original interview was not directly verified in the reporting available here, this should be treated as a paraphrased attribution, not a confirmed quotation.
A warning to Chibuzo is an audience interpretation, not an established motive. The distraction explanation, if accurate, points instead to the creature’s own interests.

Where the creature fits into the series
Alien: Earth is set in 2120, shortly before the events of Alien. Variety’s August 6, 2025 review describes the series’ setup as bringing the Maginot crash together with Prodigy’s human-synthetic hybrids. That context frames the show’s competing forms of life, but Variety’s review does not establish what T. Ocellus intends in episode 5.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the episode does—and does not—tell us
- Established in the episode account: T. Ocellus is the eye-like Species 64 parasite, and it attacks a Xenomorph while controlling Shmuel’s body.
- Plausible inference: the creature may be acting to survive or outcompete another organism.
- Not established: that it has chosen to protect humans, warn Chibuzo, or become their ally.
The attack makes T. Ocellus potentially useful to the humans caught in the conflict, but usefulness is not loyalty. Whether the creature becomes a meaningful force against the Xenomorphs depends on what the series shows next, not on a protective motive the episode has yet to confirm.
