Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have not given a joint or detailed public explanation for their reported breakup. In December 2024, an anonymous source quoted by People said they were both young and focused on their careers and had decided to take a break. A separate source told Entertainment Tonight that the relationship had not ended well and that they were taking space. Claims that infidelity caused the split remain unverified.
When did Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan break up?
Breakup reports appeared on December 3–4, 2024, after the pair had been linked in late 2023 and seen together during 2024. They made their red-carpet debut at the Met Gala in May 2024. The Los Angeles Times reported on December 4, 2024, citing a People insider, that they had split after about a year together. Carpenter was 25 and Keoghan was 32 when the reports appeared.

What reason was given for the breakup?
The clearest reported explanation came from an anonymous People insider: “They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break.” That is an attributed account, not a detailed explanation from Carpenter or Keoghan themselves.
A source for Entertainment Tonight, as quoted by ELLE, described a more difficult ending: “Things didn’t end well, and they are taking space from each other.” The source also said they were “definitely broken up right now” and that Carpenter was staying busy, figuring out what she wanted, and focusing on her career. These reports offer limited, differing perspectives; neither provides a full account of what happened between them.

Did Barry Keoghan cheat on Sabrina Carpenter?
There is no reliable confirmation in the available reporting that Keoghan cheated or that infidelity caused the breakup. A December 2024 anonymous tip to Deuxmoi alleged a connection to a Los Angeles influencer, but the Los Angeles Times and Variety described the claim as rumor or speculation, not established fact.
What did Keoghan and Carpenter say publicly?
Keoghan addressed harassment, not the breakup’s cause
On December 7, 2024, Keoghan posted on X and deactivated his Instagram account after facing harassment. He said there were “too many lines being crossed” and that he could no longer let the situation distract from his family and work. He condemned “Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, and how I am as a parent,” and asked people to “Please be respectful.” His statement addressed the harassment and his family’s privacy; it did not confirm the infidelity allegation or explain why the couple split. Variety reported his post and Instagram deactivation.

Carpenter has not offered a detailed explanation
In a March 2025 Vogue profile, Carpenter declined to discuss the breakup. She has also said she will not identify which people inspired her songs, leaving listeners to interpret them. Lyrics, music videos, and fan theories therefore cannot establish that a particular song is about Keoghan or explain the breakup.

No reliable confirmation of a reconciliation is established in the reporting cited here. ELLE’s chronology notes fan speculation in March 2025 and social-media posts in December 2025 that some fans interpreted as references to not getting back with an ex. Those interpretations do not amount to a statement from either Carpenter or Keoghan confirming their relationship status.
