Omegle permanently shut down on November 8, 2023. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, said the financial and psychological toll of dealing with abuse had made the service unsustainable. The immediate catalyst was a settlement in a child-exploitation lawsuit: the plaintiff’s lawyer said permanent closure was one of its terms. Omegle did not lose a trial or receive a court order to close.
If you want a replacement, Chatroulette is a close match for browser-based random video chat, while services such as Emerald Chat or mobile-first apps offer different formats. None should be treated as a safe environment for children, and visible reporting tools cannot prevent every harmful encounter.
Why did Omegle shut down?
Omegle began in 2009, connecting strangers for text or video conversations with little setup and no conventional social network. That immediacy was central to its appeal. It also meant the service had to match unknown people—including adults and minors—while trying to detect and respond to abuse.

He defended the value of anonymous conversation and said Omegle had invested in moderation and cooperation with law enforcement. Those were the founder’s claims about the company’s efforts, not independent proof that its safeguards were adequate. The most complete explanation has two parts: K-Brooks said the accumulated burden made Omegle unsustainable; a major lawsuit and its settlement immediately preceded the permanent closure.
The lawsuit, settlement and shutdown
The central case was brought by a plaintiff identified in court documents as A.M. She alleged that, when she was 11, Omegle’s random matching connected her with an adult who groomed and sexually exploited her over several years. Her lawsuit sought about $22 million and advanced a product-liability argument focused on how the service was designed. These were allegations, not findings after a trial. The case settled before trial. WIRED reported that permanent closure was a settlement term, citing the plaintiff’s lawyer. The settlement amount was not publicly disclosed in the cited reporting. It is therefore misleading to say Omegle was “fined,” that a court awarded the plaintiff $22 million, or that a jury found the company liable. The closure was reportedly agreed as part of a settlement, not imposed by a final court judgment.

Section 230 was relevant to the dispute over the platform’s responsibility, but the case’s resolution was a settlement, not a trial ruling that settled the legal questions. Other litigation did not all follow the same course: a separate Florida case was dismissed at an earlier stage. The A.M. case was a decisive event, but it was not the whole history of scrutiny around Omegle.
How serious were the safety problems?
Reporting, court records and criminal prosecutions document substantial risks associated with the service. WIRED reported that 608,601 child-exploitation reports were associated with Omegle through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTipline in 2022. That is a count of reports associated with the platform—not a count of unique victims, confirmed crimes or necessarily distinct incidents.
A BBC investigation reported encountering apparent minors and sexually explicit behavior during monitored sessions. Federal cases also document offenders using Omegle to expose children to sexual material or produce child sexual-abuse material. For example, the U.S. Department of Justice reported prosecutions involving offenders who used the service; those cases concern particular defendants and conduct, not every Omegle user. Is the original Omegle coming back?
The original Omegle service closed permanently on November 8, 2023. A website using the Omegle name or a phrase such as “Omegle 2.0” is not, by that branding alone, evidence that the original service has returned. Treat such sites as unofficial unless their connection to the original service can be established.
Be wary of pages that demand payment details before showing basic functionality, redirect to adult-cam services, request excessive device permissions, push browser notifications or ask for identity documents without a clear privacy explanation.

There is no universal best replacement. The options differ in whether they offer random video, interest matching or profile-based discovery—and their features, policies and availability can change. The descriptions below rely on official product information where available; they are not independent safety ratings or claims of hands-on testing.

Other names readers may encounter include Bazoocam, Camsurf, Chatspin, Shagle, Joingy and Tinychat. Their features and access conditions can change; check the official service’s current policies and signup flow rather than relying on a ranking list. A community or group-chat product may also be a poor substitute if what you want is one-to-one random matching.

- Choose by format: Decide whether you want text, one-to-one video, group conversation, interest matching or profile-based social discovery. These are different experiences.
- Check the friction: Find out whether you need an account, phone or email verification, an app, camera permissions or payment before matching.
- Read the privacy terms: No signup does not mean no data collection. A stranger may see your face, hear your voice or infer your location from what appears in the background. The service may also process technical or behavioral data. “Anonymous” may mean only that you do not create a public profile.
- Inspect controls and age rules: Look for clear block and report functions, and read what the platform says about moderation and age limits. A birth-date prompt is not necessarily age verification. Do not assume adult/minor matching is technically prevented unless the service explains how.
- Expect limits on filters and pricing: Country, gender, language and interest filters may be inaccurate, restricted by region or behind coins or subscriptions. Check the actual terms before paying.
- Check availability directly: Websites and apps can change, disappear from app stores or be restricted by country. Confirm access and policies for your location and device.
Random video chat carries risks that a reporting button cannot eliminate: nudity, harassment, sexual solicitation, scams, impersonation and recording. A stranger can take a screenshot or record a conversation. Do not share your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number, social handles, financial details or private images. If someone pressures, threatens or sexualizes the conversation, leave, block and report them; do not continue to negotiate or send material.

Children should not use random stranger video-chat services. Teenagers also face meaningful exposure risks even on services that state an age minimum or advertise moderation. An age label or cleaner interface does not establish that a platform is suitable for young people.
Bottom line
Omegle closed after 14 years because its founder said the burden of abuse had made the service unsustainable, while a settlement in a major child-exploitation case reportedly made permanent shutdown a condition. If you want the closest established browser-based random video format, Chatroulette is a reasonable place to start—but not a safety guarantee. Choose any alternative for its specific format and controls, verify its current rules, and avoid treating random stranger chat as appropriate for children.
