Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez reportedly invited Prince Harry and Meghan after their Netflix documentary moved her. The couple’s August 2024 visit also had a public program focused on Colombian communities, cultural heritage, child welfare, online safety and women’s economic autonomy. The documentary was Márquez’s reported personal motivation; it was not the government’s stated program for the trip.

Why did Francia Márquez invite Harry and Meghan?

In a September 2024 report, El País reported that Márquez had been moved by the couple’s Netflix documentary and that it inspired her invitation. This explains her reported personal impetus; it does not establish that the documentary was the sole reason for the visit or a formal government objective.

What was the Colombian government’s stated agenda?

The Vice Presidency’s August 1, 2024 announcement said the couple had accepted Márquez’s invitation to visit Bogotá, Cartagena and Cali. It described meetings with leaders, young people and women, and an opportunity to learn about Colombian communities and cultural heritage. The visit was scheduled ahead of a global ministerial conference on ending violence against children, planned for Colombia in November 2024. Noticias Caracol reported the announcement’s details.

After the visit, Colombia’s Ministry of Equality described connections with the Archewell Foundation around women’s economic autonomy, preventing digital violence against children and young people, and supporting community leaders who use art and culture to build peace. These were stated goals and reported areas of engagement, not independently measured outcomes. The Ministry’s post-visit account gives its description of the engagements.

When and where did the visit take place?

The hosted visit took place August 15–18, 2024, in Bogotá, Cartagena and Cali, according to El País’s September retrospective. It is a completed visit, not a trip still to come.

Was it an official royal or government mission?

No. Contemporary coverage characterized the trip as a hosted visit with cultural and advocacy engagements, not a British or U.S. government mission. ITV reported that Harry and Meghan were no longer traveling on behalf of the Royal Family; the trip should not be described as an official royal tour or state visit. ITV’s report on the visit provides that context.

Who paid for the visit?

The Ministry of Equality said the Sussexes paid their own travel and team costs. It said event expenses were co-funded through international cooperation and philanthropy, while government agencies provided technical support, mobility and participation by young people, women and communities. Noticias RCN reported the Ministry’s account; it is not an independent audit. Read the report on the Ministry’s financing statement.

El País separately reported public spending on security, food at some events and transport after an information request. That public expenditure is distinct from the couple’s reported personal travel costs. El País’s cost report discusses the disclosed spending.
