John Cena’s most recognizable look was not there on day one. He debuted in standard red-and-black ring gear on June 27, 2002; the jean shorts, chains, jerseys and graphic tees arrived as his larger-than-life persona took shape. These ten selections trace that evolution, chosen for clarity of character, silhouette and accessories, color or graphic impact, and connection to a notable event—not as a claim of universal fan consensus.
How Cena’s look changed with his character
WWE records Cena’s debut as a June 27, 2002 match against Kurt Angle on SmackDown. At first, his attire was conventional two-color wrestling gear. As the Doctor of Thuganomics persona emerged, he moved toward jean shorts and a deliberately unconventional mix of chains, throwback jerseys, camouflage and slogan shirts. In a WWE interview reflecting on his first decade, Cena said the non-traditional personality and the look developed together, and that he chose outlandish clothes to stand apart from performers who seemed to dress and act alike: WWE’s decade interview with Cena.
The ranking below is an editorial selection, not a measured popularity list. It distinguishes regular-era visual signatures from one-off tributes and uses WWE’s dated shirt history where an appearance can be tied to a particular event.
Ten memorable John Cena looks
1. The debut red-and-black gear
Era: 2002 debut. Look: Standard red-and-black ring attire, before the signature streetwear silhouette arrived. Its strength is its role as a visual starting point: the restrained, conventional gear makes the later transformation easy to see. WWE identifies the June 27 SmackDown match against Kurt Angle as Cena’s debut and describes his first attire as standard red and black in its career retrospective.

2. The Doctor of Thuganomics chain look
Era: Early persona shift. Look: Jean shorts, rapper-inspired styling and conspicuous chains, including the large padlock chain described in VICE’s visual retrospective. This was the point when Cena’s clothes began to announce a character rather than simply dress a wrestler. Cena himself recalled the outlandish early mix—including chains and a “Vanilla Ice” look—in his WWE interview; the specific padlock-chain description comes from VICE’s retrospective.
3. The throwback basketball jersey
Era: Early 2000s. Look: Oversized sports jersey with jean shorts, bringing the visual language of streetwear into the ring. WWE identifies throwback jerseys as part of Cena’s early style; VICE points to a 2003 Larry Bird Boston Celtics jersey worn on SmackDown. The jersey gave the silhouette an unmistakable sports-fan edge without relying on a wrestling costume’s usual shape.
4. Military-inspired camouflage shorts
Era: Established Cenation-era gear. Look: Camouflage shorts paired with Cena’s familiar cap, wristbands or graphic tee. The military-inspired pattern made a bolder, more rugged variation on his everyday shorts-and-shirt outline. WWE notes that Cena wore different camouflage shorts honoring different military branches in its retrospective; without a caption identifying a specific pair, it is better not to assign a branch to an individual image.

5. The 8-Bit shirt at No Way Out 2008
Era: 2008 return period. Look: A video-game-inspired 8-Bit graphic tee over the recognizable shorts-based silhouette. The pixel-art idea stood out from the more literal slogans and gave the shirt a playful, instantly legible graphic. WWE’s shirt-history feature dates its debut to No Way Out 2008 and places the designs in the context of Cena’s return and style transition: WWE’s history of Cena’s T-shirts.

Era: 2008. Look: The HLR Academy tee, another event-linked design worn with Cena’s established shorts-and-sneakers shape. Its acronym-style graphic feels more like a piece of a continuing persona than a generic championship slogan. WWE dates the shirt to Survivor Series 2008 in its T-shirt timeline.
7. Orange Never Give Up at Survivor Series 2009
Era: 2009. Look: An orange shirt with the Never Give Up message. The bright color gives the familiar motivational phrase extra visibility, while the event date makes this more than an undated example of Cena’s slogan-shirt era. WWE says the orange design debuted at Survivor Series 2009 in its shirt history.

8. Purple and yellow at SummerSlam 2010
Era: 2010. Look: Cena’s shorts-and-tee presentation in a striking purple-and-yellow color combination. The unusual pairing is the point: it separates this look from the red, blue and orange palette associated with other prominent shirts. WWE specifically connects the purple and yellow combination to SummerSlam 2010 in its historical account.
9. “The Champ Is Here” with the spinner-belt image
Era: Championship identity. Look: The Champ Is Here shirt alongside the spinner championship belt presentation. This pairing turns a slogan and a distinctive belt design into a unified visual shorthand for Cena as the central champion. VICE describes the shirt-and-spinner-belt combination as one of his signature visuals in its look-back feature; it is a secondary editorial characterization, rather than a WWE ranking.
10. The all-black nWo tribute at WrestleMania 36
Era: WrestleMania 36’s Firefly Funhouse match. Look: An all-black ensemble, completed by a championship belt marked with nWo-style spray paint. Rather than extending his regular gear, Cena used a one-off visual tribute that made the match’s surreal, history-bending setting part of the outfit itself. VICE identifies the ensemble as an nWo-inspired special-event look in its retrospective.

What Cena’s shirt timeline shows
WWE’s November 26, 2012 feature gives several designs firm event dates. The 10 Years Strong tee appeared at Survivor Series 2012; WWE called it Cena’s 26th official WWE T-shirt at that time. That number is a historical count published in 2012, not a current total. The sequence also shows how shirts could act as dated markers of a career era, from the 2008 return period through the 2009 and 2010 color shifts: WWE’s dated shirt history.
How the career arc ended
WWE’s current profile places Cena’s 2025 heel turn, WrestleMania 41 title win, return to his old demeanor, November Intercontinental Championship win and end-of-year retirement from in-ring competition within the close of his career arc: John Cena’s WWE profile. Those milestones make 2025 the endpoint for a retrospective of his ring looks, but they do not establish a particular farewell outfit for inclusion here.
