Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 4. The likeliest answer, according to showrunner Ryan Condal, is that Aemond and Vhagar were attacking Rhaenys, with Aegon caught in the strike. But Condal also says Aemond showed little care for his brother, and actor Ewan Mitchell encourages viewers to wonder whether Aegon was a target too. The scene invites suspicion without settling Aemond’s private intent.

What happens at Rook’s Rest?

In “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” the fourth episode of Season 2, Rhaenys and Meleys fight Aegon and Sunfyre at Rook’s Rest. Aemond arrives on Vhagar and attacks during the battle. Aegon and Sunfyre fall.

Afterward, Criston finds Aemond near Aegon, who lies motionless beside the wounded Sunfyre. Aemond has his sword drawn. That closing image makes his intentions look alarming, but it cannot by itself prove what he meant to do during the attack in the air.

Did Aemond try to kill Aegon?

Condal’s reading is that Aegon was collateral damage in an attack aimed at Rhaenys. He told TheWrap: “I can see how it can be ambiguous, but I think in the dramatization of it, it’s pretty clear Aegon is collateral damage in the action. Certainly Vhagar is looking to take out Rhaenys, but it doesn’t look like [Aemond] does it with much care for his brother.”

Mitchell offers a more open-ended interpretation. He told TheWrap the scene raises the question of “whether or not he always intentionally was going to hurt Aegon somewhere down the line, or whether or not Aegon, in that moment, was just collateral damage, because he was entangled with Rhaenys.” His concise version: “Was the target just Rhaenys, or was it Rhaenys and Aegon?”

So the grounded answer is that the showrunner sees Aegon as collateral, while the actor points to a deliberate ambiguity. Neither statement confirms that Aemond set out to murder his brother.

Why might Aemond be willing to let Aegon fall?

Mitchell describes Aemond as believing Aegon is inferior and unfit to rule, while Aemond himself deserves the status of first son despite being the second. That is the actor’s interpretation of the character, not a definitive statement of Aemond’s private thoughts.

Mitchell also connects the brothers’ hostility to Aegon’s earlier bullying and humiliation of Aemond. In this episode, Aegon has exposed him in the brothel scene, while Aemond asserts authority at the Small Council. These events give Aemond reasons to feel little concern for his brother, but they do not establish that he planned the attack to kill him.

Mitchell further characterizes Aemond and Criston as believing war is inevitable and that they should act before it reaches them. That outlook helps explain Aemond’s readiness for violence; it does not resolve whom he intended to hit at Rook’s Rest.

How to read the competing interpretations

Reading What supports it What it cannot prove
Aegon was collateral Condal says Vhagar was trying to take out Rhaenys and Aegon was caught in the action. Condal also says Aemond did not act with much care for his brother.
Aegon was a target as well Mitchell points to the brothers’ history and the scene’s ambiguity, asking whether the target was both Aegon and Rhaenys. Mitchell does not confirm a murder attempt; he favors leaving the question open.
The scene is intentionally unresolved Mitchell highlights the uncertainty, and the final image of Aemond beside Aegon sharpens it. An ambiguous scene is not proof that a hidden, definitive answer exists.

The distinction matters: the attack happens amid a chaotic dragon battle, while the closing shot encourages viewers to suspect Aemond may have more than one reason to be there. Suspicion is part of the scene’s effect, not a settled account of his motive.

Would Fire & Blood settle the question?

George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood offers background on the Targaryen civil war behind the adaptation. It is useful context, but it should not be treated as a definitive key to what the show intended with this particular attack or closing image.
