She recalled wanting to leave but not being allowed to. Reporting says she departed in 1991, after five seasons, when her option was not picked up—a contract outcome that is distinct from her account of what she wanted and felt.
What Delta Burke said about leaving
Burke discussed her time on the CBS sitcom in a 2024 interview with Chelsea Devantez. She played Suzanne Sugarbaker, a sharp-tongued interior designer, and said she initially loved both the show and the role. As circumstances changed and she became famous, she said, the experience became too much for her.
“We do ‘Designing Women,’ and I’m so happy to be there,” Burke said, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. “I love everything. But then things started to change, which I won’t go into. But that combined with becoming famous, that I simply couldn’t cope with, and I wanted to leave and I wasn’t allowed to leave.”
She summed up the experience as “ugly and very sad,” describing the breakdown in her relationship with co-creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. Burke also said, “The joy of acting left me.” These are Burke’s retrospective descriptions of her own experience, not independently established findings about the people involved.

How her account fits the reported timeline
Designing Women aired on CBS from 1986 to 1993. Burke was on the series for five seasons and left in 1991. The Los Angeles Times and People report that her option was not picked up.
That reported contract context does not erase Burke’s recollection that she wanted to leave and felt unable to do so. It describes the reported circumstances of her departure, while her interview describes how she experienced the tensions and pressures surrounding it.

The personal pressures she recalled
The Los Angeles Times reported that Burke said she experienced a breakdown and was hospitalized as early as the show’s second season. The paper also recounted her memories of scrutiny over her weight and distressing encounters with fans. These details are reported accounts of Burke’s experiences; they should not be treated as independently adjudicated claims about other participants.
Burke described trying to defend herself against what she called “lies and all the ugliness,” adding, “I’m just an actress, you know. I don’t have any power.” Her account conveys how exposed and overwhelmed she felt, without establishing the motives of others.

What Burke valued about the role
Burke’s recollections were not only about loss. She also expressed gratitude for Suzanne Sugarbaker and for what the role brought into her life, and said she valued the character’s evolution. Her account holds both things together: a part she cared about and a working experience she remembered as painful.
