Viewers objected to the look amid a disaster report, but the clips’ purpose—and Muir’s reason for wearing them—was not established in the contemporary reporting.
What viewers saw in the January 8 report
During an ABC World News Tonight report from the Palisades area, Muir wore a yellow jacket bearing the ABC News logo. When he turned, clothespins could be seen at the back, appearing to hold the fabric close to his body. The Daily Beast described two pins. Fox News’s January 9 report and The Daily Beast’s January 9 coverage documented the footage and ensuing reaction.
Why the jacket drew criticism
Social-media users criticized the fitted appearance as vain or out of step with the gravity of the fires. Jack Osbourne was among them. Fox News reproduced his post on X: “Nice Jacket Bro. Glad you look nice and svelte with those clothes line pegs, while our city burns to the ground.”
Those posts show how viewers interpreted the image; they do not establish what Muir intended. Some users speculated that the pins might have been holding microphone wire, but the cited coverage did not verify that explanation.

What is known about the clips and jacket
The clips’ function remains unconfirmed in the reporting cited here. Fox News said ABC representatives had not replied to its request for comment by publication on January 9. A January 10 Yahoo News report republishing Us Weekly said Muir had not addressed why he used the clothespin. These are accounts of what was known when those stories were published, not proof that no later explanation exists.
The same sources do not identify the jacket’s make or model, establish a protective certification, or provide product specifications. Although coverage described it as a flame-retardant or protective jacket, the footage and reporting do not establish that it was certified firefighter protective equipment. The visible clips alone also cannot confirm whether they were used for fit, a technical purpose, or something else.

What changed on the next broadcast
The January 10 report said Muir appeared on the January 9 broadcast in a looser jacket, without a visible clothespin. That report documents a difference in appearance; it does not establish why the jacket changed or show that the social-media criticism caused it.

On January 10, ABC News announced a separate, one-hour 20/20 special about the Los Angeles fires, anchored by Muir and scheduled for ABC and Hulu the next day. The ABC News press announcement concerns the network’s broader coverage, not the jacket or the viral clip.
