Dave Bautista said he liked The Killer’s Game because it offered more than another action role: he saw its screenplay as “like a rom com disguised as an action film.” In a September 2024 interview, he also explained that he was deliberately limiting supporting parts to make room for leading roles—a career choice the film put to the test.
Why Bautista wanted to change the roles he took
Bautista’s explanation was about making space for a different kind of part, not rejecting supporting work altogether. In a Moviefone interview published September 12, 2024, he said: “A couple years ago, I made a conscious decision to stop, not to stop, but to really limit my supporting roles because I felt like if I keep accepting supporting roles, I’m not going to get leading roles.”
That qualification matters: he described limiting supporting roles, not ending them. Nor did the interview establish that he had ruled out future Marvel work. “Post-Marvel” is best understood here as context for a broader career conversation, not a declaration that he had closed the door on a franchise.
What drew him to The Killer’s Game
Bautista said he had liked the screenplay from his first encounter with it, years before the interview. The element that stood out was its blend of romance and action: “The first reaction would’ve been years and years ago, and I loved it right off the bat because I thought it was like a rom com disguised as an action film.” He said he was looking for interesting roles, rather than simply taking more action films.

The film, directed by J.J. Perry, stars Bautista as Joe Flood opposite Sofia Boutella as Maize. Its story gives their relationship a substantial place alongside the action, which is why Bautista’s description points to the film’s romantic thread rather than suggesting it is a conventional romantic comedy.
A leading-man role that felt unfamiliar
Bautista framed the part as a new challenge, not as a claim that he had never led a film before. “This is kind of that first leading man, almost cliche leading man, where I just kick ass and I get the girl,” he said. His “kind of” is significant: the comment describes how he viewed this particular role and its familiar action-hero shape.

He also acknowledged feeling exposed by the change. “I’m still nervous about it, and I hope people receive it. But I had so much fun doing it, and I’m very proud of it.” Those remarks were made in September 2024, before the film’s U.S. theatrical opening; they describe his feelings at that time, not a new statement about his career today.
Romance and action are both part of the film
The Killer’s Game is an action comedy, not a romance-only film. Bautista’s comments make clear that the romantic core was a major part of its appeal to him, while the production still involved the physical demands of action filmmaking. In the same interview, he praised Perry’s preparation and action experience, and said the shoot was time-limited.

Boutella also spoke about being drawn to a softer, romantic character. She noted that her dance background had helped develop the physicality and discipline she brings to her work. Together, their comments offer a useful picture of the film’s balance: romance was a deliberate part of the performances, within an action-comedy framework.
