Critics called the remarks disrespectful; the case for an apology rests on how a major awards show treated a first-time nominee, not on proof of what its hosts intended. The sources cited here do not document an apology from the Country Music Association (CMA).
What happened at the 2024 CMA Awards?
At the 58th Annual CMA Awards on November 20, 2024, Shaboozey performed and was nominated for New Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” He won neither. His performance began with “Highway” before moving into “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” according to the Associated Press. The CMA’s recap lists him among the night’s performers, while its nominee announcement identifies him as a first-time nominee. CMA nominee announcement; CMA winners announcement; Associated Press recap.
The issue was not simply that he lost. During the telecast, presenters repeatedly turned his name into a punchline. The repetition, in front of the audience watching the ceremony, led critics to argue that the show trivialized an artist it had nominated and invited to perform.
Which jokes drew criticism?
Salon reported that Luke Bryan joked, “Yeah, we call that a sha-doozey,” and that Peyton Manning later exclaimed, “Holy Shaboozey!” The Washington Post reported that the running jokes drew criticism from country music media. Rolling Stone writer Larisha Paul characterized the treatment as “microaggressions about his name.” Those are critics’ interpretations of the remarks; the available accounts do not establish what either presenter intended. A name joke can be more than a fleeting gag when it recurs in a nationally televised setting. Critics objected that the remarks made the artist himself—not his music—the joke, and argued that this echoed a broader problem in how Black culture is treated within country music. That critique deserves to be heard without treating it as a settled finding about the hosts’ motives.
Why does the name matter to the criticism?
Shaboozey is the stage name of Collins Obinna Chibueze. Salon reported that “Shaboozey” began as a nickname given by a football coach. In an earlier interview quoted by Salon, he described the experience of having his given name mispronounced: “Hearing your name [mispronounced] during attendance was always a thing; you felt like you had to make it easier for everyone else to understand.”

That context helps explain why critics saw the ceremony’s repeated riffs as more than harmless wordplay. A name already shaped by other people’s difficulty pronouncing it became the target of jokes on a prominent stage. It does not, by itself, prove intent; it does clarify why the effect could feel dismissive.
What did Shaboozey say afterward?
On November 21, 2024, Shaboozey posted on X: “Ain’t nobody kicking me!” The Washington Post reported the response as the name-joke controversy spread. The brief post should not be treated as a direct demand for an apology, nor as proof that the jokes did not bother him. The Washington Post’s report.

How does the Cowboy Carter controversy fit?
It is related context, but a separate issue. Shaboozey worked on two tracks on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, which received no nominations for the 2024 CMA Awards, according to Good Morning America. After the nominations, he thanked Beyoncé for “opening a door for us” and “starting a conversation.” Those remarks addressed the album and its influence; they are not his response to the jokes at the ceremony. Good Morning America’s report.
The album’s omission and the jokes about Shaboozey both prompted discussion about representation in country music, but neither should be used as proof of the other. The CMA’s nomination and winner announcements establish his categories and their outcomes; they do not explain individual voters’ choices. The Associated Press describes CMA voters as music executives, artists, publicists, songwriters and other music-industry professionals. The available reporting does not reveal individual ballots or establish why a nominee won or lost. CMA nominee announcement; Associated Press recap.

What would an apology address?
The argument for an apology is that an awards show should recognize the artist it nominated and invited to perform without turning his name into a recurring gag. An apology from the CMA would acknowledge the impact of the jokes and the criticism they prompted. That is an editorial call for accountability, not a claim that Shaboozey publicly asked for an apology.
The record establishes the nominations, performance, reported jokes, public criticism and Shaboozey’s short post. The sources cited here do not document an apology from the CMA, but that absence in these accounts does not establish that no later statement exists. They also do not establish the presenters’ intent or prove that the award results reflected discrimination. The apology argument stands on the treatment critics observed, not on claims beyond that record.
