WWE never supplied a verified behind-the-scenes explanation for the booking; the case for Punk is in the story the match told.
Why did the OG Bloodline need a fifth member?
In its November 12, 2024 match preview, WWE identified the Original Bloodline as Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, and Sami Zayn. Bronson Reed’s addition to Solo Sikoa’s faction left Reigns’s side one wrestler short for the five-on-five WarGames match. WWE’s preview then announced that Paul Heyman had returned to name CM Punk as the final member.
The lineups made the immediate logic clear: Punk filled the open place without changing the match’s format. The contrast was just as useful. Reigns, the Usos, and Zayn had a history together; Punk was an outsider joining them for one high-stakes fight.
How did Paul Heyman connect Punk to the team?
Heyman was the on-screen bridge. He returned with Punk and announced him as the fifth man, giving the choice a character-based explanation instead of presenting Punk as an unrelated ally suddenly welcomed by Reigns’s family faction. WWE’s November 22 SmackDown video also described the segment as Heyman returning with Punk as the fifth man.

That explains how Punk arrived, not why WWE’s creative team chose him. The official material establishes the on-screen event, but does not provide a substantiated explanation from a named decision-maker about the booking rationale.
Why would Roman Reigns accept an uneasy ally?
Because the arrangement was useful without requiring trust. The OG side needed another wrestler, while Punk and Reigns had ample reason to be wary of one another. WWE’s November 26 commentary framed Reigns’s comfort with the choice and Heyman’s motivation as open questions, not settled answers.

The November 30 match made that friction visible. Punk pushed past Reigns to enter first, and Reigns later accidentally speared him. But when Reed attempted a Tsunami from the top of the cage, Punk pulled Reigns out of the way. The story gave them a reason to cooperate while preserving the tension that made their partnership interesting.
What happened in the WarGames match?
At Survivor Series: WarGames on November 30, 2024, Punk and Reigns ultimately worked together to defeat Sikoa’s team. The OG Bloodline isolated Sikoa, then the Usos hit their double-team offense, Zayn landed the Helluva Kick, Punk delivered the GTS, and Reigns finished with a Spear.

After the four original Bloodline members embraced, Reigns shook Punk’s hand following encouragement from Zayn. It was a small acknowledgment after Punk had helped the team—not proof that Reigns and Punk had become friends or that their distrust had disappeared.

| Team | Leader and lineup | Story dynamic |
|---|---|---|
| OG Bloodline | Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, and CM Punk | Four wrestlers with existing ties were joined by Punk, an outsider whose tension with Reigns remained apparent. |
| Solo Sikoa’s team | Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Bronson Reed | Reed’s addition created the numbers problem that left the OG side seeking a fifth wrestler. |
The comparison helps explain why Punk worked better as a story choice than a simple extra body: both teams had five wrestlers, but the OG lineup’s unity was visibly unsettled even before the match was won.

Did the handshake make Punk part of the Bloodline?
No lasting membership or settled friendship follows from the documented match. WWE’s recap shows a successful one-night alliance, tension during the contest, and a handshake at the end. Those beats support reading the moment as a temporary truce and a first step toward acceptance—not as evidence that Punk had become a permanent Bloodline member.
