Short answer: In December 2025, some users saw a Peloton-branded “Connect Peloton” suggestion in ChatGPT during conversations that did not appear related to fitness. OpenAI said it was an unpaid app-discovery experiment with “no financial component,” not a Peloton advertisement. The company later said it switched off suggestions that looked like ads. A separate, formal advertising test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, for eligible Free and Go users—not Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu accounts.
What users actually saw
Screenshots circulated on X in early December 2025 showing a ChatGPT interface card or prompt with Peloton branding and fitness language, including a call to “Connect Peloton.” At least one reported example appeared during an unrelated conversation, reportedly involving an Elon Musk podcast and xAI rather than exercise. The screenshot was also notable because the user said they were paying for ChatGPT Pro, a plan reported at $200 per month at the time.
The posts were attributed in coverage to users including Kol Tregaskes and Yuchen Jin, co-founder of AI startup Hyperbolic. They demonstrated what appeared on those users’ interfaces, but did not establish that every account saw the same prompt, that Peloton funded it, or that OpenAI had a commercial agreement with Peloton.

Was it a Peloton advertisement?
OpenAI said no. Daniel McAuley, an OpenAI data lead, described the placement as an attempt to suggest or surface the Peloton app. He said it was “not an ad” and involved “no financial component.” OpenAI characterized the behavior as app discovery, not paid media.
That answer resolves the narrow question of whether OpenAI said Peloton bought the placement. It does not erase why users experienced it as advertising. The item:
- featured a recognizable commercial brand;
- used a direct call to action;
- promoted a third-party paid service;
- appeared inside a product users were already paying for;
- was reportedly unrelated to the conversation; and
- did not initially make its app-discovery status obvious.
So the most accurate description is: an unpaid, poorly contextualized app suggestion that looked and felt like an advertisement. The available reporting does not establish a Peloton payment, affiliate arrangement, advertising contract, or Peloton involvement in the experiment. It is safer to say OpenAI denied a financial component than to claim that no money changed hands in every possible relationship between the companies.

The reported Pro subscriber was paying for a premium individual plan. Users commonly expect a high-priced subscription to avoid commercial interruptions, even when a provider has not promised that every branded integration or recommendation will be absent. That expectation made an unsolicited commercial-looking card especially provocative.

The incident was therefore about more than a technical definition of “ad.” It raised questions about whether a paid assistant should surface partner-like products without a request, how recommendations are disclosed, and whether the system is optimizing for the user or for commercial distribution.
How ChatGPT apps created the confusion
On October 6, 2025, OpenAI announced apps in ChatGPT and the Apps SDK. OpenAI said users could invoke an app by name or have one suggested when relevant to a conversation. Launch examples included services such as Zillow, Spotify, Canva, Booking.com, Coursera, Figma, and Expedia.
App discovery sits between several categories that users normally distinguish:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Category | What it means | Why users may confuse it |
|---|---|---|
| User-requested integration | You explicitly ask to use a named app. | The interface may still show a branded connection card. |
| Contextual app suggestion | ChatGPT proposes an app it believes fits the conversation. | It can resemble a recommendation or product placement. |
| Commerce result | A product or service is surfaced as part of a shopping or task flow. | The commercial purpose may not be obvious from the answer. |
| Sponsored advertisement | A paid placement clearly identified as advertising. | A branded call to action looks similar to an app card. |
OpenAI’s general app documentation says users are prompted before connecting an app so they can understand what information may be shared. That explains the intended consent flow, but it does not explain exactly why Peloton appeared in the disputed conversation. OpenAI called the lack of relevance a poor experience; the available evidence does not prove whether it was a software bug, a targeting error, or a limited experiment behaving as designed.

OpenAI’s response and the feature shutdown
After the backlash, OpenAI said it had turned off or paused app suggestions that looked like ads. Chief research officer Mark Chen acknowledged that the company had “fallen short” in handling experiences that felt like advertising. TechCrunch documented that follow-up on December 7, 2025.
This statement concerned the specific app-suggestion behavior. It was not an announcement that OpenAI had abandoned apps, integrations, or every future form of commercial display.
The later, formal ChatGPT advertising test
The Peloton episode became more significant in retrospect because OpenAI later introduced an actual advertising program. In January 2026, OpenAI announced plans to test ads. Its Help Center documentation says the U.S. test began February 9, 2026.
According to OpenAI’s published policy:
- Ads may appear for Free and Go users in eligible markets.
- Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not receive ads.
- Ads appear below the end of a response and are clearly labeled and visually separated.
- Advertising systems operate separately from the chat model.
- Advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT’s answers.
- Eligible users may receive controls to turn off personalization, dismiss an ad, submit feedback, see why it was shown, and clear advertising data.
OpenAI’s January announcement is available at Our approach to advertising and expanding access to ChatGPT. This later program is a different product feature from the December Peloton suggestion. The December screenshot was not proof that official ChatGPT ads had already launched.

What the controversy does—and does not—prove
It does show how quickly users interpret an unsolicited branded recommendation as advertising when it is irrelevant, action-oriented, and embedded in a conversational product.
It does not show that Peloton paid for placement, that Peloton knew about the test, that OpenAI sold the user’s private conversation to Peloton, or that all Pro subscribers received the card. It also does not establish that OpenAI violated ChatGPT Pro terms.
OpenAI’s app announcement supports contextual suggestions in general. The user reports support the claim that the Peloton suggestion seemed irrelevant in at least some cases. Neither source supplies a verified technical explanation for that specific recommendation or proves what data, if any, triggered it.
How to classify a branded item in ChatGPT
When you see a commercial-looking card, ask four questions:
Best Value
- Try our JRNY Mobile-Only Membership for 2 months
- Workout at home or on the go with inspiring trainers, and just-for-you adaptive workouts, from your phone or tablet
- Travel through 200+ virtual courses at your own speed or experience them alongside your adaptive workouts
- Designed to work with popular cycling apps such as Peloton and Zwift (Separate subscriptions required)
- Magnetic resistance with 100 micro-adjustable resistance levels
- Was money exchanged? OpenAI said there was no financial component in the Peloton incident.
- Is it labeled sponsored or ad? A clearly labeled item below an answer may fall under the later ad system; an unlabeled app card may not.
- Is it promoting a commercial product? Peloton plainly was, regardless of whether the placement was paid.
- Did you request it, and is it relevant? A user-requested fitness integration is materially different from an unsolicited card in an unrelated discussion.
This test avoids two opposite mistakes: calling every branded result an ad, and assuming that an unpaid recommendation cannot have advertising-like effects.
What to do if you see something similar
If it looks like an app suggestion
- Capture the full card and surrounding conversation.
- Record the approximate time, device, platform, and ChatGPT plan.
- Check whether the item says app, recommendation, sponsored, or ad.
- Review the permissions and data-sharing notice before connecting it.
- Use in-product feedback or support channels if the suggestion is irrelevant.
If it is a labeled ad
Eligible Free and Go users can use the available ad controls to adjust personalization, dismiss the ad, provide feedback, view why it appeared, or clear data used for ads. Controls and availability can vary by location and account.
If you are a paid subscriber
First verify that you are logged into the intended Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu account. Then determine whether the item is actually a labeled ad or an app, integration, shopping result, or other branded feature. OpenAI’s current policy says those paid and business plans do not receive ads, but that statement does not automatically prohibit every branded app suggestion or commerce experience.

Why this matters for AI assistants
Conversational systems are becoming discovery and commerce interfaces as well as answer engines. Context makes recommendations useful: an assistant that knows you want a hotel, workout, or design file can save search time. The same context can make a commercial suggestion feel invasive or biased, particularly when the user did not ask for it.
Trust depends on more than whether money changed hands. Users need to know whether an item is generated advice, an app suggestion, a commerce result, or a paid ad; what relevance rule produced it; and what data will be shared if they connect the service. Clear labels help, but an irrelevant placement can still feel promotional even when it is technically unpaid.
Bottom line
The December 2025 Peloton episode was not verified as a paid advertisement. OpenAI said it was an app-discovery suggestion with no financial component, then said it disabled suggestions that looked like ads. The placement nevertheless looked ad-like because it was branded, unsolicited, action-oriented, and reportedly out of context—especially jarring inside a paid Pro account.
ChatGPT advertising later became real under a separate program. OpenAI’s published policy says ads may appear for Free and Go users in eligible markets, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not receive ads. A Peloton brand appearing in ChatGPT is therefore not, by itself, proof of sponsorship; the label, placement, account type, and whether the user requested the integration all matter.
