What happened to Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie? It spent years in development at Fox, and producer Reid Carolin said the team was close to shooting when the Disney acquisition of Fox reshaped the project’s future. Tatum later said the romantic-comedy superhero film they wanted to make was far from what Disney wanted. His frustration is rooted in a creative project he says took years of work—not simply in a role he missed.
Why Tatum’s frustration over Gambit is more than a headline anecdote
Tatum and producer Reid Carolin worked on a Gambit film for years, hoping to make a project that could exist alongside the X-Men films. In a 2022 interview with ClickOrlando/AP, Tatum estimated that he had spent four and a half years developing it. He summed up the loss as “the amount of time, the amount of sweat and tears.” ClickOrlando/AP’s 2022 report is also the source for Carolin’s recollection of Tatum’s reaction as the project unraveled: “When ‘Gambit’ was falling apart, I remember Chan throwing a chair across the room.” That is Carolin’s anecdote, not an independently verified account of the incident.

Carolin also described substantial development work already done. He said the team had pre-visualized major action sequences, shot scenes and designed the film’s world. In details from a Variety interview relayed by ComingSoon, Carolin said the project was “on the one-yard line”: production offices were set up, a cast was in place and the intended shoot was in New Orleans. These are accounts from people involved, rather than independently confirmed production records. ComingSoon’s report also says the studio did not want Tatum and Carolin to direct, citing their lack of feature-directing experience—another complication besides the corporate change.
How the Disney-Fox deal changed the context
Disney announced an agreement to acquire 21st Century Fox on December 14, 2017. The company’s announcement included Twentieth Century Fox’s film and television studios among the businesses to be acquired. Disney described the deal as approximately $52.4 billion in stock, subject to adjustment, and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion under the assumptions in its announcement. Disney’s release establishes the acquisition’s announced scope and terms; it does not explain the internal decision-making on Gambit or establish that the merger was the project’s only obstacle.

What Tatum said about the creative mismatch
In comments to Vanity Fair reported by GamesRadar+ in January 2023, Tatum said the film “got swallowed up into Disney by way of Marvel when they bought Fox.” He added that “the tone of the movie we wanted to make was very far from what they wanted to do.” Tatum and Carolin had described their intended version as a romantic-comedy superhero movie. The contrast is their account of the creative direction they wanted and Tatum’s account of Disney’s preferences—not a documented statement of studio policy. GamesRadar+’s report also quotes Tatum saying that he and his team needed to “spiritually, emotionally, kind of mentally let it go.”

No. Tatum later appeared as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, released theatrically in 2024. That gave him a chance to play the character on screen, but it is not evidence that the shelved solo film was revived or that its planned story, tone or production returned. TIME’s July 2024 retrospective discusses Gambit’s comic-book background and Tatum’s appearance in the film: TIME’s coverage.
