Byrne described the conflict on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 8, 2026, three days before the ceremony, and repeated it onstage when she accepted her award on January 11.

Byrne appeared on The Tonight Show on January 8, 2026, and was asked about her partner’s absence. She said he could not come, calling it “such a bummer,” and explained: “He’s going to a reptile expo in New Jersey.” She tied the expo to the ceremony’s date, noting it fell on the same day as the Globes.

The family’s plans were the other half of the explanation. “We’re getting a bearded dragon,” Byrne said. She described the expo as a popular destination and framed skipping it as the wrong move: “And it would just be such a parent fail. So we’re doing it. I’m on board for the dragon. It’s gonna be great. [Cannavale’s] doing god’s work.”

When Byrne accepted Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, she gave the same reason in her speech: “My husband, Bobby … he couldn’t be here because we’re getting a bearded dragon and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey.”

The onstage version is the one that reached most viewers in the room and in later coverage. The television remark came first, so the explanation was public before the awards were handed out.
Who went instead
Byrne said her brother George accompanied her to the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, where the ceremony was held on January 11, 2026. Cannavale was not present in the room.

The relationship detail behind the joke
Byrne and Cannavale have been together since 2012, according to TV Insider and Swooon, which reported their Golden Globes remarks. Both use “husband” and “wife” for each other, though the outlet notes they have not formally married. Byrne’s speech used “husband,” which is consistent with how the couple has described one another publicly.
