New Order and Joy Division are no longer waiting on selection. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced both bands as 2026 Performer inductees on April 13, 2026. The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14, 2026, so as of October 8, 2026, the open question is no longer whether they will be inducted but when the ceremony will take place and how the band’s selection fits into the Hall’s process.
The 2026 timeline
The band’s path to this year’s class ran through two Hall announcements and one scheduled event:

The distinction between the April announcement and the November ceremony matters. Selection is the decision that puts a band in the class. The ceremony is the public event where inductees are honored. Articles that still describe the band as un-inducted are describing a status that changed in April.
In the February nominee announcement, Hall of Fame Foundation Chairman John Sykes said: “This diverse list of talented Nominees recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture.” When the inductees were announced in April, Sykes said: “Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music’s highest honor. We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year’s ceremony – it’s going to be an unforgettable night.”

How the Hall selects inductees
The Hall’s process runs in stages, and the public sees only the announcements at each stage:
- Eligibility check. An artist must have a first commercial recording at least 25 years before the induction year. Meeting this threshold makes an artist eligible; it does not make the artist a nominee.
- Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee selects eligible artists to be put forward as nominees.
- Ballot to the voting body. For 2026, the nominee announcement describes a ballot sent to an international panel of more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. The Hall’s process page describes the voting body in similar terms and includes Inductees among its members.
- Fan Vote. The Hall’s process page says the annual online Fan Vote is counted as one ballot within the process.
- Announcement of inductees. The Hall announces the new class, then holds the ceremony later in the year.
The Hall’s process page gives a general annual range of five to seven Performer inductees. That range describes the Hall’s usual practice as stated on that page. It is not a guarantee of a fixed count in every year.
The criteria the Hall publishes
The Hall describes its selection standards as musical excellence, cultural impact, influence on later musicians, and the scope and longevity of an artist’s career and body of work. The 2026 nominee announcement uses the same framework, which makes these the criteria to measure any artist against, including New Order and Joy Division. They are the Hall’s own standards, not an independent scoring system.

Why eligibility did not mean immediate selection
Joy Division and New Order were eligible well before 2026, and the band had been nominated in previous years. Under the Hall’s rules, a nominee who does not receive enough votes must be nominated again to be considered in a later cycle. That is the general procedure the Hall publishes.

What the Hall has not published is the band’s specific vote history. The sources available for this article do not give vote totals for earlier years, do not say who supported or opposed the band, and do not record committee deliberations or a documented reason for any earlier non-selection. Any explanation that names a specific cause, such as a particular voter bloc or a single controversy, would go beyond the evidence. The accurate statement is that the band was nominated before, was not selected in those years, and was selected in 2026 under the same published process.
What the Hall says about the band’s influence
The Hall’s own profile describes Joy Division and New Order as post-punk pioneers and innovators on the electronic dance floor. It identifies “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and “Blue Monday” as foundational to dance music and alternative rock. Readers should treat this as the Hall’s assessment, not as an independent consensus among critics or historians.

The profile also covers the band’s history. After Ian Curtis died, the remaining members of Joy Division continued as New Order. They added keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and moved toward synthesizers and dance rhythms. The profile connects the band’s identity to Factory Records artwork, to its music videos, and to the Haçienda club in Manchester, and it names later artists the band influenced.
For readers who want to check the influence claims against the Hall’s wording, the profile is the primary source. It states the case from the Hall’s point of view, which is also the point of view that shaped the 2026 selection.

If you searched “Why aren’t New Order in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet?”, the answer is that they are now in the class. The band was selected in April 2026 and is scheduled to be inducted at the November 14, 2026 ceremony. Earlier non-selection is a matter of record, but the Hall has not explained that history in detail, and the published process explains the mechanism rather than the outcome of any single year.
The next concrete point to watch is the induction ceremony on November 14, 2026, when the band is formally honored.
