Why Are Fireworks a 4th of July Tradition?

Fireworks joined the Fourth of July as early celebrations used lights and rockets as public signs of independence. Here is the record from 1776 to today, with current safety figures.

Fireworks became a Fourth of July tradition because the earliest national celebrations used them as public signs of independence. The idea began in 1776 with John Adams’s call for lights, bells and bonfires, took organized form in Philadelphia in 1777, and spread as cities adopted the holiday. Fireworks also filled a practical gap: as public safety concerns gradually pushed cannon and gunfire out of celebrations, lights and rockets became the loudest and most visible way to mark the day.

Where the idea started: Adams’s 1776 letter

On July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail about the day Congress had voted for independence. He expected that the anniversary would be solemnized for generations, and he listed the ways. In the wording reproduced by HISTORY, the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Two details matter here. Adams placed the anniversary on July 2, the day of the vote, not on July 4, the date of the adopted declaration that later became the holiday. And his list contains “illuminations” and bonfires, not aerial fireworks as the modern public understands them. The letter establishes the impulse to celebrate with light and noise; it does not describe the rockets that followed.

Philadelphia, 1777: the first organized celebration

The first organized Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. A contemporary newspaper report, quoted by HISTORY, says the evening ended with bells and a “grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets).” The thirteen rockets echoed the thirteen colonies, and that symbolism is the clearest early link between fireworks and the nation’s identity.

Adams wrote about the day again the following day. The National Archives reproduces his account in remarks by Archivist David S. Ferriero: “I had forgot the ringing of the bells all day and evening, and the bonfires in the streets, and the fireworks played off.” That is a later official presentation of the letter rather than the manuscript itself, but it supports the presence of fireworks in Philadelphia’s first anniversary celebration.

How the custom spread and replaced gunfire

The celebration did not become a fixed national custom overnight. Cities kept repeating the pattern, and Boston designated July 4 an official holiday in 1783, according to HISTORY. Each new city’s observance added its own bells, bonfires and displays.

Fireworks grew more central after the War of 1812. They became more widely available, and public safety concerns gradually moved celebrations away from cannon and gunfire. That shift is the practical reason fireworks, rather than guns, became the signature of the holiday. The sources describe the transition as gradual, so there was no single date when gunfire ended and fireworks took over.

The timeline at a glance

Date What happened Source
July 3, 1776 Adams writes to Abigail, proposing celebrations with guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations HISTORY

After the War of 1812 Fireworks grow more prominent; safety concerns lead to a gradual move away from cannon and gunfire HISTORY

Why the custom stuck

The historical sources point to three overlapping reasons, though only the first two are stated directly in the record.

  • Light as a symbol. Adams’s own wording pairs bonfires and illuminations with the celebration, and fireworks extended that symbolism into the night sky. A display can be seen across a town at once, which suits a holiday meant to be shared.
  • Replacement for gunfire. Cannon and guns were the traditional loud celebration, and safety concerns pushed them out. Fireworks kept the noise and spectacle while offering a controlled alternative.
  • A public, communal format. Displays were organized for whole communities, which is how the custom was first documented in Philadelphia. This is an interpretation of the sources rather than a claim any source makes explicitly.

Safety today: the current figures

The tradition’s origins are older than its safety record, and the figures below show why officials now urge caution. The three sets of numbers come from different agencies and cover different years, so they should not be combined.

Source and year Figures reported Scope
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2026 release (June 24, 2026), reporting 2025 data At least 15 deaths reported; an estimated 13,000 emergency department-treated injuries linked to fireworks misuse and malfunction; an estimated 1,300 injuries involving sparklers Figures for 2025 as reported in the CPSC release
National Fire Protection Association, 2023, as reported by the National Park Service 32,302 fireworks-caused fires: 3,760 structure fires, 849 vehicle fires and 27,252 outside fires 2023 figures, reported secondhand by NPS
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2024, as reported by the National Park Service 11 fireworks-related deaths; 14,700 people injured 2024 figures, reported secondhand by NPS

The CPSC figures are the most recent of the set. The NPS article is older and reports other agencies’ numbers, so readers should cite the originating agency and year when quoting either.

What official guidance recommends

CPSC’s current advice, in its 2026 safety release, is consistent with the NPS guidance. It recommends that people:

  • Buy only legal consumer fireworks, and only where they are allowed.
  • Keep children away from fireworks, including sparklers.
  • Keep water nearby.
  • Do not use fireworks while impaired.
  • Never relight a dud.
  • Leave fireworks to professionals and attend community displays, which CPSC calls the safest way to celebrate.

Local rules vary widely, so check your city, county and state requirements before any private use. The National Park Service makes the same point about local rules.

What the record does and does not establish

The early history rests on a small set of documents. The direct quotations come from Adams’s letters and a 1777 Pennsylvania newspaper report. Broader claims, such as the Boston holiday in 1783 and the post-1812 shift away from gunfire, come from HISTORY’s secondary synthesis, not from the primary documents quoted here. The sources do not include a modern official statement on the origin of the custom, and no national survey was located that measures how many Americans celebrate with fireworks.
