Billie Eilish said “People are scared of big boobs” in a 2021 ELLE cover-story interview, while discussing how people reacted to her changing appearance and a photo she had posted. She said she had lost 100,000 Instagram followers “just because of the boobs”—her estimate, not a figure independently verified by platform data. The remark was part of a longer conversation about body scrutiny, clothing and the assumptions people make from someone’s appearance.
What was Billie Eilish responding to?
The remark appeared in ELLE’s 2021 cover story, published around the release of Happier Than Ever. Eilish was talking about the reaction to her appearance as her public style changed, including responses to a photo she had shared. The point was not that one outfit revealed a new identity; it was that people treated a visible change as something to judge and interpret.
She connected that reaction to everyday comfort, saying, “It’s 500 degrees and I just want to wear a tank top.” Her comment pushed back on the idea that choosing a more revealing garment must carry a larger message about who she was.
Did she really lose 100,000 followers?
Eilish said she lost 100,000 followers “just because of the boobs,” as reported in The Independent’s coverage of the interview. That number should be understood as her own reported estimate: the cited coverage does not provide an independent audit of her account’s follower data.

How the quote fits her earlier comments on body scrutiny
2019: clothing and a double standard
In a 2019 interview with ELLE, Eilish objected to the way people judged women’s clothing through the lens of their bodies. She described how the same tank top could prompt different reactions depending on the wearer’s chest, and warned against using praise for her own covered-up style to shame women who dressed differently. The interview was published when she was still a minor, so the relevant context is her criticism of public scrutiny—not the sexualized details of that scrutiny. Read the 2019 interview.
2020: assumptions based on size
During a video interlude on the first night of her 2020 world tour, Eilish addressed the competing judgments people made about her body and clothes. The Guardian reported her line: “You make assumptions about people based on their size.” The interlude challenged the audience’s sense that appearance gave them the right to define her. The Guardian reported on the interlude.

Did one photoshoot mean she had a new style?
No. In a later interview, Eilish explained that the British Vogue corset shoot had a specific visual concept. She said viewers treated it as “a new style,” while she saw it as one outfit for one shoot—not a permanent change in how she would dress. “It’s not a new style, it’s one thing I wore and then I’m gonna wear this another day and then I’m gonna do this,” she said. The Independent covered her reflection.

Eilish’s remark is best read as a pointed response to people treating her body and clothes as a public statement. It documents her account of the reaction, including the follower-loss estimate; it does not establish how common those reactions were or measure the quote’s broader effect on body image. The sources cited here do not provide a named, methodologically described study of that impact.
