Robert Eggers gave Count Orlok a mustache because he imagined the vampire as a dead Transylvanian nobleman from the late 16th century. Eggers said facial hair belonged to his conception of the character’s time and culture—and acknowledged that the choice departs from Max Schreck’s look in the 1922 Nosferatu.
Why does Count Orlok have a mustache?
Eggers’ explanation starts with the character’s imagined past, not with an attempt to reproduce the original film’s silhouette. In remarks reported by GamesRadar+ on April 12, 2025, the director said that imagining Orlok as “a dead Transylvanian nobleman” led him to the period clothing and mustache. He also described facial hair as part of the culture, saying, “It’s part of the culture.”
Eggers put the point bluntly: “there’s just no fucking way that this guy wouldn’t have a moustache”. That is the director’s design rationale for this version of Orlok, not a claim that every Transylvanian nobleman wore facial hair.
How does Eggers’ Orlok differ from the 1922 version?
Max Schreck’s Orlok in F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film is the reference point for the contrast: Eggers’ character has facial hair, while Schreck’s familiar screen image does not. Eggers said he loved Schreck’s appearance and recognized that the mustache was a change. The new design therefore reinterprets the earlier image rather than copying it.

The difference is part of a broader shift in framing Orlok as a man with a specific historical identity. It does not, by itself, establish that Eggers’ design is more historically accurate than Schreck’s.
What did the costume designer say about the historical design?
Costume designer Linda Muir described Orlok as a real man who lived in the late 16th century in the area that is now Romania. In Focus Features’ December 20, 2024 interview, she said, “Since Orlok (Skarsgård) dates to the late 1580s, we wanted to imagine him in his period garb.” She explained that the costume drew on paintings of counts from that period and military books showing uniforms.

Muir’s account supports the period-based thinking behind the character’s clothes. Eggers’ remarks give the direct explanation for the mustache: it fit the nobleman he had imagined, despite the visible departure from Schreck’s portrayal.

This is Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, released in 2024, with Bill Skarsgård among the cast. Focus Features’ official film page describes it as a gothic tale of obsession. The mustache is Eggers’ interpretive choice for this film’s Count Orlok—not a feature carried over from the 1922 screen design.
