Arnold Schwarzenegger said he had received a pacemaker after an irregular heartbeat linked to scar tissue from earlier heart operations. What Schwarzenegger disclosed about his pacemaker surgery
In an episode of Arnold’s Pump Club released March 25, 2024, Schwarzenegger said the operation had taken place the previous Monday. He joked, “I had surgery for a pacemaker and became a little bit more of a machine.” ABC News Australia reported that he said he was doing well after the procedure.
He also explained why he chose to speak publicly: “I know a lot of you are probably dealing with your own health challenges and I want you to know you aren’t alone.” He encouraged listeners to take health concerns seriously and follow medical advice. Both quotations were reported by ABC News Australia from the podcast disclosure.
Why did Arnold Schwarzenegger get a pacemaker?
ABC News Australia reported that Schwarzenegger’s pacemaker was recommended after an irregular heartbeat associated with scar tissue from earlier heart surgeries. The report linked that medical history to his congenital bicuspid aortic valve and its subsequent operations. His reported heart and valve history
A bicuspid aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the usual three. According to the ABC report, it can become narrowed or leaky over time. Schwarzenegger’s mother and grandmother were also reported to have the condition. The report lists his earlier valve surgeries as occurring in 1997, 2018 and 2020, and says scar tissue from the operations contributed to the irregular heartbeat.
What does a pacemaker do?
A pacemaker is a small device that uses electrical impulses to help maintain a healthy heartbeat. ABC News Australia says doctors may recommend one when a heartbeat is too fast, too slow or irregular. The device’s purpose in general does not, by itself, explain the cause of a particular person’s rhythm problem or determine what treatment that person needs. Schwarzenegger’s reported case is not a guide to another patient’s care.
