Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If an Apple movie plays on your computer but goes black on a projector, the leading suspect is HDCP: the protected-video connection between the playback device and the display. An authorization problem or an incompatible adapter, dock, receiver, switch, or cable can also stop playback. Start by testing the movie on the computer’s built-in screen, then connect directly to the projector with HDMI before replacing anything.
On current Macs and Windows PCs, Apple movies are generally played in the Apple TV app; some older Windows systems still use iTunes. The steps below cover both current and legacy app labels.
Start with the quickest diagnosis
- Test the built-in screen. Disconnect the projector and any dock or adapter, then play the movie in the Apple TV app (or iTunes on an older Windows installation). If it fails there too, check the account, authorization, app, and download before troubleshooting the projector.
- Connect directly to the projector. Use HDMI from the playback device to the projector, bypassing docks, receivers, switches, splitters, extenders, converters, and extension cables. Select the correct projector input and retry.
- Try another HDMI input and a known-good cable. If possible, test the same source with an HDCP-capable television or monitor.
- Confirm the computer is authorized. Make sure the app is signed in to the Apple Account that owns the purchase or rental.
- Restart and update. Restart the playback device and projector, then check for available operating-system and app updates.
If the movie works on the built-in screen but fails only when the projector is connected, the external display or connection chain is the leading suspect. If it fails on every display, investigate the account, app, title, or download first.
Why a projector can show your desktop but not the movie
HDCP is a content-protection handshake: the playback source checks whether the display and the devices between them can receive protected video. Apple says video content requires an HDCP connection, and warns that some movies may not play through non-HDCP digital connections such as VGA adapters. That is why a desktop, presentation, or ordinary local video can appear normally while protected movie playback produces a black screen, audio without video, an HDCP warning, or a playback error. Apple’s media terms and adapter troubleshooting guidance describe these requirements.

HDMI is the connector type, not a guarantee that every device and input supports HDCP. The source, adapter, cable, dock, switch, receiver, extender, and projector input all form part of the path. One incompatible or malfunctioning link can disrupt the handshake. Check the projector manual or manufacturer specifications for HDCP support on the exact input and, where stated, the supported version and resolution.
Isolate the failing part of the connection
1. Test without the projector
On a Mac or Windows PC, play the movie on the built-in display. If it works there, the purchase and basic app playback are probably functioning; focus on the external display path. If it does not, go to computer authorization and app and download checks.
2. Remove intermediary equipment
For the test, use a simple path: playback device, direct HDMI cable, projector HDMI input. Remove VGA connections, HDMI-to-VGA or VGA-to-HDMI converters, composite or component converters, USB display adapters, docks, HDMI splitters and switches, AV receivers, capture cards, wireless display systems, and extension cables. Apple recommends removing converters or extensions when troubleshooting adapter problems. See Apple’s adapter guidance.
Turn on the projector, choose the connected HDMI input, and establish the connection before starting the Apple TV app. Restart both devices and test again. If direct HDMI works, reconnect removed devices one at a time; the item after which playback fails is the likely point of failure.

3. Test the cable, input, and another display
- Try a different HDMI input on the projector; inputs on the same model may not have identical capabilities.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable after bypassing intermediary equipment. Replacing a cable will not fix a projector input that lacks HDCP.
- Connect the source to an HDCP-capable television or monitor, if available. If the movie works there but not on the projector, the projector or its selected input is a stronger suspect.
- If available, test another Apple playback device directly with the projector. If it works, investigate the original computer, adapter, or software; if it also fails, focus on the projector input and HDMI path.
Apple’s Apple TV troubleshooting steps also recommend testing a direct connection when a switch or receiver may be involved.
Authorize the Mac or Windows PC
A computer must be authorized for the Apple Account that acquired the movie. Apple allows up to five authorized computers at one time; iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices do not count toward that computer limit. Check the signed-in account as well as authorization, especially after setting up a new or replacement computer. Apple’s authorization instructions give the current paths.
On Mac
- Open the Apple TV app or Apple Music app and confirm that the correct Apple Account is signed in.
- In the menu bar, choose Account, then Authorizations.
- Select Authorize This Computer, sign in, and retry the movie.
On Windows with the Apple TV or Apple Music app
- Open the app and click your name at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Choose Authorize Machine.
- Sign in to the Apple Account used for the purchase, then retry playback.
On an older Windows iTunes installation
Choose Account → Authorizations → Authorize This Computer. Menu labels differ between legacy iTunes and Apple’s current Windows apps; Apple also documents the legacy iTunes authorization path.
If the authorization limit has been reached and old computers are no longer available, Apple provides a Deauthorize All option in the documented account-recovery scenario. Apple says this reset can generally be used only once per year. Review the account page and Apple’s current instructions before using it.

Make sure you are playing the movie in a supported app
A movie associated with an iTunes purchase is not necessarily an unrestricted video file. Use the Apple TV app on current Mac and Windows systems, or the supported iTunes installation on an older Windows system. Start it from the app’s Library rather than opening a downloaded file in Finder, VLC, QuickTime Player, Plex, or another player. Renaming or copying the file does not remove content protection. Apple’s media terms distinguish protected content and prohibit tampering with or circumventing security technology.
- Open the Apple TV app and go to Library, then Movies.
- Confirm that the movie appears under the Apple Account signed in to the app.
- If a recent download fails, try streaming the title while online. If streaming works, delete the local copy and download it again through the app.
- Try another purchased movie. If only one title fails, a damaged download, title availability, or account entitlement may be involved.
Apple explains how to redownload purchased movies on Mac and Windows. Purchased titles may not always remain available for redownload if Apple loses distribution rights; see Apple’s download and availability guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connecting an iPhone or iPad
For wired playback, use HDMI rather than VGA and an Apple Digital AV Adapter or another adapter explicitly documented to support protected video. Connect the adapter directly to the projector; remove conversion devices, docks, and extension cables for the test. Reconnect the adapter and HDMI cable, restart the device and projector, and check for iOS or iPadOS updates.
A device’s home screen, photos, or ordinary videos appearing on the projector does not guarantee that a protected movie will play. Some movie and streaming apps require HDCP, and Apple warns that VGA paths and some conversion accessories may not support the required protected-video connection. Apple’s adapter guidance covers these limitations.

Check the projector’s actual HDCP capability
Look up the exact projector model and verify HDCP support for the HDMI input you are using. Check whether the manufacturer specifies a supported HDCP version and whether that input supports it at the resolution and refresh rate selected on the source. Also check whether one input has different capabilities from another and whether a firmware update is listed for the model.
A firmware update may improve compatibility, but it cannot add HDCP capability that the hardware does not have. If the projector is VGA-only, or its relevant input lacks the required protected-content support, changing software or buying another cable will not make that path compliant. Use a compatible display or playback setup instead.
Read the symptom before choosing the next fix
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop works; movie turns black when playback begins | HDCP handshake or external display chain | Connect directly by HDMI and bypass intermediaries |
| An HDCP warning appears | Non-HDCP input, adapter, or conversion path | Remove VGA and converters; verify the exact projector input |
| Movie fails on every display on one computer | Authorization, account, app, download, or computer software | Check the Apple Account and authorize the computer |
| Audio plays but video is black | Protected-video negotiation or rendering | Test direct HDMI and another HDCP-capable display |
| Only one title fails | Title entitlement, availability, or damaged download | Try streaming it and test another title |
| Movie works on a TV but not the projector | Projector input or model compatibility | Check that input’s HDCP specifications |
| Movie works on the built-in screen only | External cable, adapter, dock, switch, receiver, or projector | Bypass the entire chain with direct HDMI |
| The app repeatedly requests a password | Account mismatch or authorization | Confirm the purchase account and authorize the computer |
These patterns are clues, not guarantees. A single-title failure can have more than one cause, and a working desktop connection does not demonstrate that protected video is supported.
When Apple TV hardware helps—and when it does not
An Apple TV device can be a convenient dedicated source and may avoid computer graphics-driver, computer-authorization, or dock problems. Connect it directly to the projector during testing. It still needs an HDCP-compatible projector input and a compatible HDMI path, so it will not solve a projector limitation. Apple also says movies cannot be downloaded directly to Apple TV hardware for offline playback; use the device to stream from the library. Apple’s movie download guidance explains which devices support downloads.

Confirm the projector specification before considering replacement; a purchase will not fix an authorization or intermediary-device problem.
Rentals and account-specific checks
Purchases and rentals are not interchangeable. Apple’s terms state that rentals are viewable on one device at a time, generally must be started within 30 days, and generally must be finished within 48 hours after playback begins. These terms can depend on the applicable country, service, and rental type, so check the terms that apply to the rental. If a rental has expired or is active on another device, projector troubleshooting will not restore it. Apple’s media terms set out the applicable rules.
Quick Recap
What not to try
- Do not assume that an HDMI connector guarantees HDCP support.
- Do not buy several random cables before bypassing docks, receivers, switches, and converters.
- Do not expect a VGA converter, HDMI splitter, or screen-mirroring setting to defeat a protected-video restriction.
- Do not try to strip DRM, capture protected playback, or bypass HDCP. Such methods may violate Apple’s terms and applicable law, and they are not a sound compatibility fix.
