Funimation is no longer an active streaming service. Its website and app closed on April 2, 2024. Former Funimation viewers were directed to Crunchyroll, although catalog availability, dubs, subtitles, watch history, and digital-copy support vary by region and title. See Crunchyroll’s service-closure notice for the current limitations.
You can use Discord’s normal screen-sharing feature to watch a Crunchyroll episode with friends, but protected playback may appear as a black screen or block audio. The reliable fallback is for everyone to watch through their own authorized Crunchyroll session while using Discord for voice chat.
What you need
- An active Discord account and permission to share in a voice channel or call.
- A Crunchyroll account with lawful access to the episode. The former Funimation catalog is not identical in every country.
- A current Windows or macOS computer, browser, Discord client, operating system, and graphics driver.
- A stable internet connection and an output device such as headphones.
- Operating-system permission for Discord to capture your screen.
Crunchyroll’s support documentation lists Chrome 117 or newer, Firefox 117 or newer, Edge 117 or newer, and Safari 16.1 or newer as browser baselines at the time of publication; verify the current supported-browser list before a group session.
Test with a free or openly playable video five minutes before your event. This separates ordinary Discord problems from protected-content restrictions.

How to start the Discord stream
Prepare Crunchyroll
- Open the official Crunchyroll website or supported app.
- Sign in and start the episode.
- Confirm that the video and audio work locally.
- Pause playback, close unnecessary tabs and demanding programs, and keep the Crunchyroll window easy to identify.
Go live from a voice channel
- Open the Discord desktop app or supported web client.
- Join a voice channel or start a voice call.
- Click the Screen or screen-streaming icon beside the voice controls.
- Select the browser or application window containing Crunchyroll. This is the preferred option.
- If Discord cannot detect it, select the entire screen instead.
- Choose the offered resolution and frame rate, enable stream audio when available, and click Go Live.
- Ask viewers to select the stream, unmute it, and set their own volume.
- Resume playback in Crunchyroll.
Discord documents this workflow and says a voice chat can support up to 50 people sharing video or screens. That capacity does not guarantee smooth anime playback; bandwidth, permissions, hardware, and server settings still matter. See Discord’s screen-share instructions.
Window sharing versus full-screen sharing

Use window sharing first. Before choosing the entire screen, close private material and enable Do Not Disturb.
Fix a black screen
If you see the episode but viewers see black, the cause may be protected-content rendering, a browser-capture conflict, a driver problem, or a missing screen permission. A black screen is not proof that Discord is broken.
- Stop the stream and verify that Crunchyroll plays normally on your computer.
- Update Discord, the browser, your operating system, and graphics drivers.
- Disable unnecessary extensions, especially ad blockers, VPN or proxy extensions, and video-modifying add-ons.
- Try a private or incognito window.
- Try another supported browser.
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video → Video and, where shown, disable Hardware Acceleration. Restart Discord.
- Check Windows or macOS screen-recording permissions and restart the affected applications after changing them.
- Lower the share resolution and frame rate.
- Try entire-screen sharing; if that fails, switch back to application-window sharing.
Discord recommends updating software and drivers, checking capture permissions, reducing quality and frame rate, and confirming adequate bandwidth in its voice and video troubleshooting guide. Crunchyroll recommends updating the browser, disabling interfering extensions, private browsing, and switching browsers in its browser playback guidance.

Hardware acceleration is a diagnostic step, not a universal cure. It can resolve a rendering conflict, but it may increase CPU use, heat, fan noise, or stutter, and it cannot guarantee that protected video will be capturable. Change one setting at a time.
When DRM is the reason
Digital-rights management (DRM) controls how subscription video is decoded and displayed. A browser can show the episode to you while preventing another application from receiving the video frames. Audio may continue even when the captured picture is black, and behavior varies by browser, operating system, graphics hardware, and service.
Crunchyroll documents DRM errors including MED, SHAK-6*-GENERIC, and SHAK-6*DRM. Its recommended checks include using a current browser, enabling protected content or Widevine where required, and removing extensions that interfere with playback. Follow Crunchyroll’s DRM troubleshooting; do not disable or defeat DRM protections.
If local playback works but every legitimate capture method remains black, stop looking for bypasses. Use Discord for voice and synchronized playback, with each participant watching through their own authorized Crunchyroll session. Do not record, redistribute, use capture-card workarounds, install DRM-removal tools, or use extensions designed to defeat protected playback.

Fix missing or choppy audio
- Confirm that stream audio was enabled when you started sharing. Restart the share after changing it.
- Ask the viewer to unmute the stream and check the viewer’s Discord volume.
- Confirm that Discord is using the intended output device.
- Check the operating system’s per-application volume mixer and ensure the browser tab is not muted.
- Try the Discord desktop app or a supported browser if the current client does not transmit audio.
- Reduce resolution or frame rate if audio becomes choppy.
Discord documents audio capture on Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome browser, and mobile clients, while its support page states that audio sharing is unavailable on Linux. Client permissions and system configuration can still affect results. See Discord’s platform notes.

Chrome and Edge
Keep the browser current, check protected-content permissions, test without extensions, and restart both Discord and the browser after changing hardware acceleration. Chrome and Edge are listed among Crunchyroll’s supported browsers.
Firefox
Firefox is a useful alternative test, not a guaranteed solution. DRM and capture behavior can differ by operating system and graphics configuration.
Safari and macOS
Review macOS screen-recording permissions and test browser-window capture separately from full-screen capture. Audio behavior can differ between the Discord desktop client and browser client.

Linux
Discord’s documented Linux limitation is the lack of audio sharing. You may be able to share video, but synchronized individual playback with Discord voice chat is the practical dependable option.
Mobile
iOS and Android screen sharing is not equivalent to desktop browser sharing. Mobile operating systems and streaming apps may produce a black screen, no audio, or both, and behavior can change after updates. A desktop browser and Discord client are preferable for troubleshooting. Do not attempt to defeat mobile capture protections.
Keep a group watch synchronized
- Choose one playback controller and count down before pressing Play.
- Pause and resynchronize if viewers drift.
- Confirm that everyone has the same episode and subtitle or dub version.
- Use headphones to prevent microphone echo.
- Silence notifications and keep spoilers in a marked text channel.
- Check regional availability before scheduling the session.
Discord’s Crunchyroll connection is not screen sharing
Discord can connect to Crunchyroll and show the anime title, season, and episode as an activity status. To try it, open User Settings → Connections, choose Crunchyroll if it is offered for your account and region, authorize it, and review activity-visibility settings. Disconnect it from the same area.
This integration reports presence; it does not transmit episode video or synchronize playback. UI labels and availability may change. See the official connection FAQ.

Some protected playback paths simply cannot be captured reliably on a particular browser, device, or update. The responsible alternative is synchronized local viewing: each person uses their own authorized Crunchyroll access while Discord supplies voice and text chat. Premium tier device counts do not automatically authorize rebroadcasting, and a subscription does not guarantee screen-share compatibility.
Discord and Crunchyroll change clients, playback systems, and settings over time. Re-test after browser, driver, operating-system, Discord, or service updates rather than assuming yesterday’s setup will continue to work.
