Just Sam said they returned to busking in New York’s subway because they could not afford rent or food. They also said the return was embarrassing and far from what they had imagined after winning American Idol in 2020.
Why did Just Sam return to the subway?
Sam gave a direct financial reason in a 2023 interview with The Washington Post: “But I literally could not afford to pay my rent. I couldn’t afford to eat.” Videos of Sam singing in subway stations, with a donation box nearby, had circulated widely that spring.
Before Idol, Sam had busked in New York’s subway stations since they were young. They said they had imagined returning one day for fun or nostalgia, not because they needed the income. “If I ever went back to the trains, I didn’t expect it to be something that I had to do. I felt like it would be something that I did for fun, you know, relive an old moment or memory, you know?” Sam told the Post.
What happened after Sam won American Idol?
A win during the pandemic
Sam won Season 18 in May 2020. The pandemic shaped the finale: finalists performed remotely, and Sam celebrated the result from a Los Angeles hotel room while seeing their grandmother on an iPad. The show had introduced Sam as a subway singer who helped support their grandmother.

A disrupted recording launch
After the win, Sam received a recording deal connected with Hollywood Records and 19 Recordings. Sam told the Post that pandemic conditions delayed studio work and slowed the momentum of a typical winner’s launch. The Post reported that Sam parted ways with the labels less than a year after the win.
The account does not establish a definitive reason for the end of the arrangement. Sam did not explain in detail what went wrong with the label, and their management team declined to clarify the agreement, citing nondisclosure concerns. The labels and production company did not provide on-record comment to the Post.

Did Sam blame American Idol?
No. Sam said they did not blame the show, its producers, or its judges for their financial hardship, and expressed gratitude for the experience: “I’m grateful for them. They changed my life forever,” Sam said. “Even though it’s not in the way I expected.”
The Post reported that recent Idol winner contracts had paid $125,000 at the win and another $125,000 on delivery of an album, for a reported total of $250,000. That figure was general context about recent contracts, not confirmation of Sam’s specific contract or earnings.

How did American Idol respond to Sam’s return?
On April 28, 2024, Sam returned to the show to perform Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time.” The performance had a full stage production and confetti—a contrast with the remote 2020 finale. Sam said producers told them they wanted to give them a moment they had missed the first time around.
Executive producer and showrunner Megan Wolflick said she had wanted to bring Sam back when the timing worked. “We were super, super happy to welcome them back with open arms and give them the full treatment in the gown and the makeup. And the confetti was really important because they never got confetti,” Wolflick told the Post. Sam speculated that media attention and the response from fans helped lead to the invitation, while Wolflick described the producers’ own interest in welcoming them back.
