In a November 2, 2024, People interview, American Pickers star Mike Wolfe recalled that he was with Frank Fritz for about an hour before Fritz died, held his hand and rubbed his chest as Fritz took his last breath, and told him he loved him. That is Wolfe’s personal recollection, not an independently witnessed account of every detail.
What Mike Wolfe said about Frank Fritz’s final moments
Wolfe described being at Fritz’s side during the final hour and holding his hand as he died. The account appeared in a People exclusive published November 2, 2024, and was identified as a People interview in a Yahoo Entertainment syndication result. Yahoo Entertainment’s syndicated report carries the account; the specific actions and words should be understood as Wolfe’s recollection.

In a tribute shared on Instagram and reported by the Los Angeles Times, Wolfe also wrote, “I feel blessed that I was there by his side when he took one last journey home.” He remembered Fritz as “the same off camera as he was on,” saying Fritz “had a way of reaching the hearts of so many by just being himself.” The Los Angeles Times reported on Wolfe’s tribute.
What is independently reported about Fritz’s death
Frank Fritz died on September 30, 2024, at a hospice facility in Davenport, Iowa, at age 60, according to the Associated Press. The AP report quoted longtime friend Annette Oberlander, who said she and Wolfe were at Fritz’s bedside. That contemporaneous account supports Wolfe’s presence, while the later People interview is the source for his more detailed description of the final moments. Read the Associated Press report.

Why Wolfe and Fritz were known to viewers
Wolfe and Fritz were longtime co-hosts of American Pickers, which debuted in 2010. Fritz left the series in 2021, several years before his death, according to the Los Angeles Times. Their television partnership provides context for Wolfe’s public tributes, but Fritz was not still a co-host on the show when he died.

The History Channel and producer Cineflix confirmed Fritz’s death in a joint statement, but their initial statement did not disclose a cause, the Los Angeles Times reported. The AP noted that Fritz had a stroke in 2022 and did not fully recover; that history does not establish that the stroke was his certified cause of death. CBS News’ AP report also covered his death at age 60.
