He described the offer as “a fortune,” but his explanation was about understanding the script—not rejecting the pay.
Why did Al Pacino turn down Han Solo?
Pacino recalled that the script was given to him while he was doing a Broadway show. He said he read it and thought, “I don’t understand.” He then sent it to Charlie Laughton, whom he described as a friend and mentor, and asked what Laughton made of it. In Pacino’s account, Laughton did not understand it either.
Pacino later summed up his decision this way: “They offered me a fortune, but I don’t know. No, I can’t play something if I don’t speak the language.” The remarks were attributed to Pacino in an Entertainment Weekly interview and reproduced in reports published by ComicBook.com and The Independent on June 8, 2025.
Was Al Pacino offered a fortune to be in Star Wars?
Pacino said he was offered “a fortune,” but the two reports do not give a dollar amount or contract terms. The phrase describes his recollection of the offer; it does not establish a specific salary.

Who played Han Solo after Pacino declined?
Harrison Ford ultimately played Han Solo. Pacino joked about the outcome: “I said, ‘I think I’m in the mood to make Harrison Ford a career.’” It was a remark about Ford getting the role, not evidence that Pacino selected or cast him.
