Alan Ritchson says filming Reacher’s cold-water escape in Season 3, Episode 3 was difficult—but the show stopped short of the full nudity in Lee Child’s novel. In “Number 2 with a Bullet,” Jack Reacher slips away from a guarded coastal property by swimming to meet a DEA task force, wearing underwear and carrying his clothes in a plastic bag.
What happens in the escape scene?
Reacher strips down to black underwear, bags his clothes, and swims from the coastal property through the water to reach the DEA task force. The scene is a near-nude swim, not full nudity.

What Alan Ritchson said about filming it
In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly and republished by Yahoo on February 20, 2025, Ritchson described the water work and rock-crawling as unpleasant. “That water work was pretty tricky, and stripping down and crawling across those cold, wet rocks naked was not the funnest for me and for just about anybody watching — but we did it because we love the show,” he said.
Ritchson also said he had hoped the sequence would be skipped after he read the novel: “Having read the book and enjoying it, that was the one that I was like, ‘I hope we skip over that.’” The interview report says much of the setting was built in a large indoor pool and a wave-maker was used; those production details are attributed to that report.

How the episode differs from Lee Child’s novel
The escape comes from Lee Child’s 2003 novel Persuader. In the book, Reacher puts his clothes in a plastic bag and swims naked; the series has him swim in underwear instead. Child acknowledged the adaptation change in the interview: “No, he swims in his underwear. So that’s one of the changes, but that’s worth seeing.”
