AJ Lee left WWE in 2015 after several pressures converged, according to her later account—not for one publicly confirmed reason. WWE announced her retirement from in-ring competition on April 3, 2015, without explaining the decision. Years later, Lee described a “perfect storm” involving circumstances inside and outside the company, her husband’s situation with WWE, and her physical and mental health. She also said she had achieved the career milestones she had set for herself.
What WWE announced in 2015
On April 3, 2015, WWE announced that Lee had decided to retire from in-ring competition with the company. The notice stated the decision but did not give a reason. It did not say that an injury caused her departure. WWE’s announcement is therefore evidence of when and what the company announced, not an explanation of Lee’s motives.
How AJ Lee later explained her decision
In a 2026 discussion reported by WrestlePurists, Lee described the final year of her career as a “perfect storm.” She cited events inside and outside WWE, matters involving her husband and the company, and her physical and mental health. She said she had reached every milestone on her ten-year wishlist, but also made clear that she was not okay.
Her account connects career fulfillment with personal strain: reaching the goals she had set did not make the pressures around her sustainable. It supports a picture of several contributing circumstances, rather than a single cause. WrestlePurists’ report quotes Lee discussing those circumstances during WWE Unreal Season 3.

What CM Punk said—and what it does not establish
In a 2015 interview, Lee’s husband, CM Punk, offered his own view of her working situation. He said people had made it difficult for her to work somewhere she loved, and that the situation had become “no longer ideal.” That is Punk’s interpretation, not an official WWE explanation or a substitute for Lee’s later account. Cageside Seats reported his comments in July 2015.
Why the accounts should be kept distinct
- WWE’s statement: confirms Lee’s retirement from in-ring competition with WWE on April 3, 2015, but gives no motive.
- Lee’s later explanation: describes multiple pressures, including health and circumstances involving WWE and her husband, alongside a sense of having achieved her career goals.
- Punk’s contemporaneous view: characterizes her workplace situation as difficult and no longer ideal, but remains his account of it.
Together, these accounts help explain the context, but they do not prove one exclusive cause. Claims that WWE officially said she left because of an injury go beyond the announcement; Lee did later include physical health among the factors she described.

Lee’s view of her career after leaving
In a 2017 interview while promoting her memoir, Crazy Is My Superpower, Lee said she felt she had had a “pitch perfect” career and would be nervous about tarnishing it by returning, while leaving the possibility open. That was a retrospective reflection on her career and a potential return, not a contemporaneous explanation of her 2015 decision. Wrestling Inc.’s interview report includes those remarks. The memoir offers a further way to read about Lee’s life and career, but it should not be treated as proof of a single retirement motive.
