Adult NSFW games were not all deleted from itch.io. In July 2025, the platform removed adult projects from public browse and search while it reviewed content amid payment-processor scrutiny. Some projects could face permanent removal, but itch.io said deindexing left project pages and files accessible through other routes. Its later update began restoring free adult content to discovery and described a slower process for paid content.
What happened on itch.io in July 2025?
On July 24, itch.io announced that it had removed adult NSFW content from its public browse and search pages. The platform linked the urgent action to scrutiny from payment processors and said a campaign by the advocacy group Collective Shout had brought concerns to processors. It said it would audit affected content and that some projects might be permanently removed.
The distinction between deindexing and deletion matters. In its July 31 follow-up, itch.io defined deindexing as removing projects from search, browse, and recommendations while leaving their pages functional. Files could still be reached through users’ libraries, collections, and creator profiles. A project that remained accessible this way was not necessarily approved for continued listing or protected from later removal.
Were games deleted, or just hidden?
The initial action was a broad removal from public discovery, not proof that every affected game had been erased. Itch.io’s July 24 statement described possible permanent removals as part of an audit; its July 31 explanation said deindexed pages and files remained accessible through specified routes. Those are different outcomes, and the public statements do not establish the final status of every project.

On July 31, itch.io said it was restoring free adult NSFW content to search and browse first. It described paid content as a slower process while discussions with payment processors continued. The update also said Stripe payments had been disabled on pages identified as adult NSFW and that content warnings were being implemented as part of indexing eligibility.
Why did itch.io take action?
Itch.io explicitly cited payment-processor scrutiny. In its July 31 update, the platform relayed a statement it said Stripe had asked it to pass along: “Stripe is currently unable to support sexually explicit content due to restrictions placed on them by their banking partners, despite card networks generally supporting adult content (with the appropriate registrations).” That is itch.io’s account of what Stripe asked it to communicate, not independent confirmation that every processor or card network applies the same rules.

Itch.io also connected the scrutiny to Collective Shout’s campaign concerning content on itch.io and Steam. The platform said payment processing was critical to both creators and its operations. That explains the platform’s stated context; it does not establish that a processor ordered the removal of every individual game.
How was Steam’s action different?
The two storefronts acted in the same month amid concerns about payment rules, but their documented responses were not identical.

| Platform | Documented July 2025 action | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| itch.io | Deindexed adult NSFW projects from public browse and search during an audit, then said free content would be reindexed first and paid content would return more slowly. | Its statements distinguished public discoverability from page and file access, and cited processor scrutiny. They do not establish the final outcome for every project. |
| Steam | Revised distribution rules concerning content that may violate payment-processor standards, as described in contemporary reporting. | The reporting connects the rule change to processor standards; it does not show that Steam followed itch.io’s deindexing-and-reindexing process. |
The Guardian’s July 29, 2025 report described Steam’s July 16 rule update and itch.io’s July 24 action. It also reported, attributing the figure to Game File, an estimate of more than 20,000 games removed from itch.io’s NSFW category since July 16. That is a reported estimate, not a verified final count from itch.io.
What does itch.io’s current adult-content policy say?
Itch.io’s creator FAQ, as observed October 7, 2026, permits some fictional, illustrated, or rendered adult content if it is legal, while setting restrictions on both content and monetization. The FAQ is the relevant source for current platform rules; individual availability can also depend on a creator’s payment setup and location.

Content restrictions
The FAQ says itch.io does not allow sexualized images or videos of real-life humans. It says AI imagery designed to resemble photographic content of real people is not allowed. It also prohibits content glorifying sexual violence and sexual depictions of minors, people presented as minors, or suggested minors.
Rules for projects that take money
Creators who collect money must comply with the acceptable-use policies of every payment processor connected to their account. Itch.io’s FAQ gives a non-exhaustive list of themes it says it cannot support for sale, including non-consensual content; underage or “barely legal” themes; incest or pseudo-incest; bestiality or animal-related content; rape, coercion, or force; sex-trafficking implications; revenge porn, voyeurism, or hidden-camera content; and certain bodily-waste or extreme-harm fetishes. The FAQ says reviews may be handled case by case and warns that violations can lead to frozen or refunded pending transactions and ineligible payouts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are adult games still on itch.io?
The July 31 update said itch.io was reindexing free adult NSFW content and planned to reintroduce paid content more slowly. That historical update does not establish the current status of every game, creator account, payment configuration, or region. The creator FAQ describes present platform restrictions, but the reviewed public statements do not provide a complete project-by-project account of the 2025 audit or a definitive current status for all paid adult content.
For a particular game, check whether its project page is live, whether it appears in public search or browse, and whether the creator has provided an alternate access route. For a creator considering sales, consult itch.io’s live FAQ and the policies of the payment processors attached to the account.
