Adam Sandler said NBC fired him from Saturday Night Live in 1995. He offered a possible explanation—new network leadership wanted a reset and he was known as “sophomoric”—but stressed that he did not know the precise reason. The available accounts do not establish one definitive motive for the decision.

Who fired Adam Sandler from Saturday Night Live?

Sandler said NBC fired him, not Lorne Michaels. In a December 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Stern asked whether Michaels had let him go. Sandler replied, “He didn’t,” and then said, “NBC fired me.” CBS News’ account of the interview reports the exchange.

What reason did Sandler give?

Sandler framed his explanation as a guess, not inside knowledge. He said, “I think they just needed to make a move and get rid of — I was known as sophomoric… I think they had new brass, new guys were running it. They wanted to start over.” The repeated “I think” matters: Sandler was describing his impression of the circumstances, not confirming NBC’s internal rationale. The interview report does not establish a definitive reason.

What was happening at SNL in 1994–95?

The show’s wider climate provides context, but not proof of why Sandler personally was dismissed. In the retrospective Saturday Night Live in the ’90s: Pop Culture Nation, participants recalled negative press, network involvement, and falling ratings during the 1994–95 season. Writer Tim Herlihy described ratings as “in, like, freefall.” That is a qualitative recollection, not a published ratings figure or evidence that ratings caused Sandler’s firing. The retrospective transcript records these accounts.

How did Sandler describe the departure later?

Sandler and fellow cast member Chris Farley both left in 1995 after being fired, according to Sandler’s account as reported by CBS. Looking back, Sandler also described the end of their time on the show as a natural close to a run: “We kind of quit at the same time as being fired. It was the end of the run for us.” On the question of why they were let go, he said, “The fact that me and him got fired? Who knows.” CBS News reports both remarks.

What did Sandler say when he returned to host?

Sandler returned to SNL as host on May 4, 2019, more than two decades after leaving the cast. In a comic monologue, he sang about NBC, his characters, and Farley’s departure. The performance revisited the story as comedy; it did not reveal the network’s decision-making. The Washington Post’s report on the monologue also noted Sandler’s earlier acknowledgment that he did not really know why he had been fired.

What can be said with confidence?

  • Sandler said NBC fired him in 1995 and explicitly said Lorne Michaels did not.
  • He speculated that new network leadership wanted a reset and that his “sophomoric” image may have counted against him.
  • He did not claim certainty about the precise reason; broader concerns around the show that season do not establish a specific cause for his dismissal.
