The Neighbourhood said its indefinite hiatus began in November 2021, reunited in the studio in November 2024, and announced its return publicly on August 30, 2025. Drummer Brandon Fried was included. The band’s account of his departure followed a separate 2022 public allegation by vocalist María Zardoya and Fried’s apology; those statements should not be conflated.

When did The Neighbourhood reunite?

The band said it went on an indefinite hiatus in November 2021, after ten years together. It later said the members reunited in the studio in November 2024, including Fried. The public announcement came on August 30, 2025, when the group described the return as the start of a “next chapter.” Rolling Stone reported the dates and the band’s statement.

The group attributed the 2021 hiatus to a range of personal changes and difficulties, including entering their early thirties, facing life outside the band, breakups, family struggles, and other personal challenges. That is the band’s explanation, not a definitive account of each member’s private reasons.

Why did Brandon Fried leave the band?

Zardoya’s allegation and Fried’s apology

In November 2022, María Zardoya publicly alleged that Fried had groped her under a table. Rolling Stone reported that Fried admitted his actions and apologized, describing them as “a reflection of who I become while under the influence.” The allegation and apology are distinct accounts; the reporting does not independently verify every detail.

The band’s explanation for his departure

The Neighbourhood said Fried’s substance-abuse struggles needed immediate attention and that it was best for him to step away to focus on recovery. This was the band’s stated framing of his departure, not an independent finding about Zardoya’s allegation. In its 2025 return statement, the band said it was proud of Fried and the changes he had made. That expresses the band’s view; it does not independently establish his recovery progress. Rolling Stone reported the allegation, apology, and the band’s statements.

Is Brandon Fried back in The Neighbourhood?

Yes. The band included Fried in its account of the November 2024 studio reunion and in the public return announcement in August 2025. Its statements establish that he was part of the band’s return; they do not explain the members’ private deliberations about his place in it.

Jesse Rutherford’s perspective in 2026

In an interview published by V Magazine on August 7, 2026, vocalist Jesse Rutherford said the band wanted to return to the road and reconnect with fans and with one another. He said, “Our goal was to get the ball rolling again,” and described the experience as feeling “brand new, like a second chance.” These are Rutherford’s reflections, rather than a statement on behalf of every member. V Magazine published the interview.
