Yes, the footage that surfaced in March 2025 came from The CW’s canceled live-action Powerpuff project—but the circulating trailer was a fan-made edit, not an official trailer. The pilot was filmed in 2021 and never became a series. The short edit offers a glimpse of the proposed adult take on Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, not a complete picture of the unreleased pilot.
Was the leaked Powerpuff Girls trailer real?
The footage was real; the trailer edit was not official. TheWrap reported that CW sources confirmed the clips came from the scrapped project, while describing the video circulating online as a fan-made compilation of scenes. There was no official trailer, according to TheWrap’s March 6, 2025 report.
That distinction matters: the edit combines genuine production footage into a trailer-like presentation, but it should not be treated as a finished marketing preview or as evidence of the pilot’s full content.
What would the canceled show have looked like?
An adult reunion story
The proposed series moved the heroines into adulthood. Its central setup was that Townsville had turned against the crime-fighting trio, driving Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup apart. When darkness returned to the city, they were drawn back together. The premise and the reported scenes point to a reunion drama built around the women’s fractured relationships as well as the return of danger.

A deliberately strange, adult tone
TheWrap’s description of the footage includes Bubbles drunk and Buttercup rejecting her green dress. Coverage characterized the project’s approach as adult-oriented, campy and intentionally strange. Those details convey the pilot’s irreverent direction, but a brief fan-edited compilation cannot establish how the entire episode played or whether its story worked.
The complete pilot has not been established as publicly available in the reporting cited here. The footage is therefore a partial window into one version of the project, not a substitute for the unreleased episode.

Who was cast in the proposed series?
The initially announced leads were Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Donald Faison was announced as Professor Drake Utonium, their father. The 2021 coverage also named Nicholas Podany as Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum and Tom Kenny as narrator.
These names describe the announced cast, not necessarily a final lineup for every version under consideration. Bennet exited in August 2021 during the project’s redevelopment; TVLine’s reporting attributed her departure to scheduling conflicts. The CW said Blossom would be recast, but the pilot was not ultimately ordered as a series. TVLine reported Bennet’s exit on August 11, 2021.

Why did The CW rework—and then stop developing—the pilot?
The 2021 decision to try again
The CW did not pick up the filmed pilot to series and said it wanted to rework it. Then-chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz publicly described the pilot as a “miss” and said it may have felt “a little too campy” and not sufficiently rooted in reality for the network. He also said the network saw enough elements to give it another shot. Those remarks explain the stated reason for revising the pilot; they do not establish the full reason the project ultimately ended.
As TVLine reported Pedowitz’s comments on August 11, 2021, he said: “Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss.” He added that the pilot “didn’t work” and that the network did not want to proceed with the version it had. TVLine’s report also covered Bennet’s departure during that period of redevelopment.

The project’s status in 2023
In May 2023, CW entertainment president Brad Schwartz said the network had returned projects to their studios so the studios could develop and sell them elsewhere. TVLine reported that Powerpuff was no longer being redeveloped at The CW. That establishes its status at the network in 2023; it does not show that a revised version was later produced or sold. TVLine’s May 18, 2023 report covered the change.
