Disney said it wanted to avoid inflaming a tense situation and later announced the show would return on September 23. The decision unfolded amid public criticism from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, but the public timeline alone does not prove that FCC pressure caused ABC’s move.
What Kimmel said before ABC pulled the show
In his September 15, 2025, monologue, Kimmel criticized efforts to portray Kirk’s alleged killer as outside the MAGA movement and what he described as attempts to score political points from the killing. CBS News reported Kimmel’s wording: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” (CBS News, September 18, 2025)
How the decisions unfolded
| Date | Decision-maker and scope | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| September 17, 2025 | ABC / Disney network programming | ABC said the program would be preempted indefinitely. Nexstar and Sinclair also announced preemptions on stations they operated. (CBS News, September 18, 2025) |
| September 22, 2025 | Disney / ABC network programming | Disney announced that the show would return Tuesday, September 23. (ABC News, September 22, 2025) |
| September 23, 2025, and afterward | Local stations operated by Nexstar and Sinclair | The show returned to ABC, while the two station groups initially continued their preemptions. ABC News later reported that both announced an end to those preemptions; the reports do not establish the current schedule of every local station. What Disney said about the suspension and return
Disney described the move as a suspension of production, not a permanent cancellation. The company said it acted “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country” and because it felt some comments were “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” On September 22, it said conversations with Kimmel led it to bring the program back. These are Disney’s stated reasons, as reported by ABC News; they do not independently establish every factor behind the decision. (ABC News, September 22, 2025)
What role did FCC Chair Brendan Carr play?
Before ABC announced the indefinite preemption, FCC Chair Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel’s remarks and said, “The FCC is going to have remedies we could look at,” according to CBS News. Carr’s comments are part of the public context and chronology. They do not, by themselves, show that the FCC ordered ABC to act or that its pressure caused the network’s decision. Why questions about broadcaster pressure remain unresolved
Senators wrote to Nexstar and Sinclair on September 24, 2025, asking whether regulatory matters involving the companies were connected to their local preemptions. Their letter cited a proposed Nexstar acquisition of Tegna valued at $6.2 billion and estimated that the combined company could reach 80% of U.S. television households, up from 39%. Those figures describe the senators’ account of a proposed transaction, not a completed acquisition or an independently established outcome. The letter raised questions; it did not prove a connection, an exchange of favors, or a legal violation. (Senator Chris Van Hollen’s office, September 24, 2025)
Nexstar’s spokesperson separately told CBS News that the company made its decision unilaterally and had no communication with the FCC or another government agency before deciding. That denial and the senators’ questions are both part of the record; neither alone settles the company’s motive. (CBS News, September 18, 2025) (Senator Chris Van Hollen’s office, September 24, 2025)
