Neither explanation is evidence that a completed or planned 28 Months Later film was canceled.
What Danny Boyle said about the title jump
In a June 3, 2025 interview with Next Best Picture, 28 Years Later director Danny Boyle explained: “And because this community is where they are set 28 years later, it’s taken so long to develop this that we skipped months and went straight to years, haha!” Read Boyle’s interview.

Boyle linked the title to two things: the story’s 28-year setting and the time it took the project to develop. His delivery was lighthearted, so the remark is best read as a playful explanation of the leap—not as a detailed account of the film’s development history.
Why a much longer gap suited the story
In a 2024 interview about the trilogy concept, Alex Garland described how the passage of time unlocked a particular idea. That supports a broader creative interpretation: moving forward by decades gave the filmmakers room to imagine a substantially different situation, rather than simply continuing events a few months after the earlier films. Garland’s comments are context for that interpretation, not a separate verbatim explanation from Boyle. Read the Gizmodo interview with Garland.

- Decades after the rage virus outbreak, survivors live in isolation. When one leaves his ruthlessly quarantined island sanctuary, he uncovers haunting secrets and mutations in both the infected and the remaining humans. From director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland comes a bold return to the world of 28 Days Later.
Does that mean 28 Months Later was canceled?
No such conclusion is established by the available interviews. Boyle’s comment explains the jump in the title, while Garland’s remarks suggest how a longer interval helped shape the story. Neither proves that a finished 28 Months Later production existed and was then scrapped.

Sony describes 28 Years Later as a story in the world created by 28 Days Later. Sony’s official FAQ identifies 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple as the second installment in the new trilogy following 28 Years Later. Those official descriptions provide franchise context, but they do not add a different explanation for skipping “months.” Sony’s 28 Years Later page · Sony’s The Bone Temple FAQ.
