Ciarán Hinds plays the Dark Wizard in Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The series places him in Rhûn, where he commands magic-wielding followers, but the available reports do not establish his personal name.
What is known about the Dark Wizard?
Amazon’s official character description, reproduced by TIME, calls him “a dark and powerful wizard, whose origins and intentions are shrouded in secrecy” and says he has “a legion of magic-wielding acolytes who obey his every command.” The description places him in Rhûn, a land east of Middle-earth’s familiar western regions. Among his followers are the three travelers who sought the Stranger at the end of Season 1.
Hinds was announced as a new Season 2 cast member by Amazon. TIME reported that the Dark Wizard first appears in the second episode of that season. Its September 17, 2024 report described his identity and purpose as unresolved through Season 2, episode 5; that account reflects the story at that point, not necessarily the latest aired episodes.
Is Ciarán Hinds’ character Saruman?
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were later reported to have said the character’s identity would be revealed early in Season 3. In an interview with GamesRadar, McKay stated: “We can say definitively he is not Saruman. Definitively, 100% he is not.” This rules out Saruman according to the reported comments, but it does not by itself provide the character’s personal identity. Whether the promised reveal has aired should be checked against the latest episodes.

What are the other identity theories?
TIME discussed possible links to a Blue Wizard, Khamûl, Saruman, or a character created for the series. These were possibilities raised while the mystery was still open, not confirmations. The later reported denial excludes Saruman, while the sources cited here do not confirm the Blue Wizard or Khamûl theories.
Tolkien’s writings about the Blue Wizards, including material published in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, help explain why viewers have speculated about that connection. Lore parallels are not proof of the character’s identity in the adaptation.
