Who Wrote Memories by Barbra Streisand? The Credited Writers of “Memory”

Barbra Streisand did not write the song you are likely asking about. The track “Memory” is credited to Andrew Lloyd Webber, T.S. Eliot, and Trevor Nunn. Streisand’s 1981 album Memories includes that recording as its first track, and the album title is plural while the song title is singular. The official Streisand catalog lists the credit as “A. Lloyd Webber, T.S. Eliot, T. Nunn.”

Why the title causes confusion

Three similar names appear in Streisand’s catalog, and they belong to different recordings with different writers. Matching them by exact title is the only reliable way to avoid mixing them up.

Exact title Album or context Release timing (official catalog) Credited writers
“Memory” Memories, first track Album released November 1981 Andrew Lloyd Webber, T.S. Eliot, Trevor Nunn
“Make It Like A Memory” Guilty Album released September 1980 Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten
“The Love Inside” Memories Album released November 1981 B. Gibb (official track listing)
“Woman In Love” Guilty era, separate song Recording Academy eligibility window for the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards: recordings released October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1980 Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb (Recording Academy songwriter credits)

The phrase “Make It Like A Memory” is the one most likely to produce a wrong answer. It is a different song from “Memory,” and its credit does not carry over.

The credited writers of “Memory”

The official catalog credits the song to three people, each with a distinct role in its creation:

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for “Memory.” The song comes from the stage musical Cats.
  • T.S. Eliot is the poet whose verse provides the source material for Cats, drawn from his collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
  • Trevor Nunn is credited on the track as a writer, alongside Lloyd Webber and Eliot, for the lyric adaptation used in the musical.

Streisand’s recording is a performance of a song written by others. She is credited as the singer, not as a writer, on the official track listing.

How the song reached the Memories album

The official Streisand catalog describes Memories as an album of previously released tracks with three new selections. “Memory” from Cats is one of those new additions. The other two are an alternate version of “Lost Inside of You” from A Star Is Born and “Comin’ In And Out Of Your Life,” a new tune by Bobby Whiteside. The album was released in November 1981 and lists ten tracks, with Barbra Streisand credited as producer.

Come From Away
  • COME FROM AWAY is the breathtaking new musical written by Canadians Irene Sankoff and David Hein and produced by Tony-nominated director Christopher Ashley (Memphis)

This structure explains why the album title and the song title differ. The album collects material from several sources, and “Memory” is one piece of it rather than the album’s namesake.

Keeping the Gibb brothers’ credits separate

Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb appear in Streisand’s catalog, which is a common source of mix-ups. Their credits sit on other recordings:

  • “Make It Like A Memory” from Guilty (September 1980) is credited to Barry Gibb and Albhy Galuten. The official Guilty page also names Gibb, Galuten, and Karl Richardson as producers.
  • “Woman In Love” is credited to Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb in the Recording Academy’s songwriter credits for the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards. The eligibility window for that ceremony covered recordings released from October 1, 1979 through September 30, 1980.
  • “The Love Inside” on Memories is credited to B. Gibb in the official track listing. It is a separate song from “Memory.”

None of these credits extends to “Memory.”

How to confirm a songwriting credit yourself

  1. Search the artist’s official website and open the album’s catalog page. Compare the exact track title with the spelling you saw, including singular or plural forms.
  2. Read the writer credits printed on that track entry. For Memories, “Memory” is listed under Lloyd Webber, Eliot, and Nunn.
  3. Check the album’s release date against the song you are researching. Releases in 1980 and 1981 are different albums, so a date match rules out a title that belongs to the other record.
  4. If you have a physical copy, read the liner notes. They usually repeat the writer credits and sometimes list publishers, which the online catalog may omit.

Following these steps resolves most confusion, because the three similarly named items above can be separated by album and writer.
