Whoopi Goldberg led a reunion choir through songs from Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit on The View on June 5, 2024, as the show marked the film’s 30th anniversary. The special featured “Oh Happy Day” and “Joyful, Joyful,” with former cast members and music collaborators joining Goldberg.
What happened on The View?
The June 5, 2024 episode brought together Goldberg and several people associated with the 1993 film for a studio conversation and musical reunion. Returning actors included Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena and Sheryl Lee Ralph; music collaborators Marc Shaiman and Mervyn Warren also took part. Former child performers returned as well. TVLine’s account of the anniversary special reports that Goldberg wore her nun’s habit and led the choir.
The View’s official account, quoted by TVLine, described “Oh Happy Day” as the number that kicked off the reunion. “Joyful, Joyful,” the song associated with the film’s climactic choir sequence, closed the performance portion.

Did Lauryn Hill return for the reunion?
No. Lauryn Hill did not return for the The View performance. The Independent reported that Tanya Trotter, of The War and Treaty, sang the lead in Hill’s place on “Joyful, Joyful”; Ryan Toby also returned. The reunion lineup should not be mistaken for the original film cast performing unchanged. The Independent’s report identifies Trotter’s role and Hill’s absence.
Why the film still resonates with its cast
During the anniversary conversation, Goldberg reflected on how viewers identify with the young performers: “I think everybody recognizes themselves. I think worldwide, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you are the age of those kids when you see the movie.” TV Insider transcribed Goldberg’s remarks.

Najimy recalled how quickly the young cast became part of the group: “I thought the kids were miraculous,” she said. “I felt like they were in our veins right away. We were all one huge family. They got the tone of it. They were so talented and gorgeous and smart and fun.” TVLine transcribed Najimy’s comments.
