The Golden Bachelor season 2 finale aired in November 2025, so Mel Owens’ choice is no longer a prediction: he gave his final rose to Peg Munson, over Cindy Cullers. They did not get engaged on the show. Owens gave Munson a commitment ring, and the season’s controversy over his age-related remarks remained part of the story surrounding that result.
Who did Mel Owens choose?
Owens gave his final rose to Peg Munson. In the finale, he also gave her a ring, but it was not an engagement ring or a proposal. He described it as a commitment to love and as time for the two of them to work out what their future would hold. ABC News reported the outcome on Nov. 13, 2025; TheWrap also described the ending as an unconventional commitment rather than an engagement.

Munson told TheWrap, “That’s our love story, and we get to write it.”
Why was Owens’ potential choice called problematic?
Before filming, Owens said on a podcast that he preferred women aged “45-60 (years old)” and recalled telling an executive producer, “You know, if they’re 60 and over, I’m cutting them.” ABC News reported those comments on Sept. 25, 2025. The same report said Owens also spoke about wanting contestants to be fit because he was staying in shape and working out, and asked to avoid “artificial hips and wigs.”

The remarks drew criticism because they appeared to set an age cutoff for a show centered on dating later in life. Owens was 66, and the comments also singled out women’s bodies and appearance. That helps explain why some viewers and contestants saw a mismatch between the premise of the series and the lead’s stated preferences; it does not establish Owens’ private motives.
What did Owens say after contestants challenged him?
Some women confronted Owens as they met him on the premiere. Diane, 71, asked, “What the puck was that interview on that podcast?” Carla, 62, said, “I’m here to break all of your stereotypes about women over 60.”

Owens acknowledged the comments and apologized. As reported by ABC News, he said, “I messed up,” and later: “I was wrong. I replay it in my head a lot. I have regrets and I’m sorry for all the things I said in the podcast.” He also asked the women to forgive him and give him the chance to earn back their trust.
How did the season’s cast and choices compare with his stated cutoff?
ABC News reported that 23 women competed, ages 58 to 77. Owens gave his first-impression rose to Gerri, who was 64, and his final rose to Munson, who was also over 60. Those televised choices differ from the cutoff he described before filming, but they do not show why he made them or erase the earlier remarks.

What the finale ring meant—and what it did not mean
Owens said the ring represented commitment, not a proposal: “I have a ring and this represents our commitment to love to give us time to figure out together what our future holds,” ABC News reported. TheWrap’s Nov. 13, 2025 interview with Owens and Munson likewise describes a shared decision to use a commitment ring rather than announce an engagement. The finale established their on-show choice to continue together, not that they had married or become engaged.
