New Zealander Shay Williamson won Alone Australia Season 3 after spending 76 days in Tasmania’s West Coast Ranges (lutruwita). The finale, which aired on 4 June 2025, ended with a late pademelon catch and the medical withdrawal of runner-up Muzza. Williamson’s wife, Abby, surprised him at camp that day, when he learned he had won the $250,000 prize.
How Shay Williamson won Alone Australia Season 3
Williamson’s win came after 76 days in the wilderness, a record-setting duration for the program at the time, according to SBS’s 4 June 2025 winner announcement. The finale’s outcome was shaped by two developments: a pademelon catch gave Williamson a late food source, while Muzza was withdrawn on medical grounds, as SBS News reported.
Williamson was not a newcomer to living off the land, but Tasmania presented unfamiliar conditions. He is from New Zealand and worked as a professional trapper. SBS’s pre-season profile said he had trapped possums since age 16 and spent years living off the land. He entered the competition with an ambitious intention, telling SBS, “Tapping out is not an option… It might sound crazy, but I’m going to be there for 300 days.”
What Williamson ate during his 76 days
SBS’s 2025 winner report described a varied but hard-won food supply. It reported that Williamson gathered or caught more than 1,100 worms, 23 trout, 13 eels and two whitebait, as well as freshwater shrimp, grubs and moth pupae. The late pademelon catch marked a turning point near the end of his stay.

Those figures are the examples SBS published about Williamson’s season; they are not a complete nutritional account. The list also shows the range of small and larger food sources he relied on rather than a steady supply from any one source.
Why the result was uncertain: medical checks and Muzza’s withdrawal
Williamson’s experience and persistence did not remove the physical risk of staying in the competition. In an interview with SBS News, he said he feared being removed after losing a quarter of his body weight. Medical staff increased the frequency of his checks because they were concerned about his weight loss, but allowed him to continue.

Muzza, the runner-up, was withdrawn soon afterward because of medical concerns, SBS News reported. That withdrawal was part of the finale’s closing sequence, but it does not change the fact that Williamson’s 76-day stay was the winning duration.
The day-76 reunion and the $250,000 prize
On day 76, Williamson’s wife, Abby, arrived at his camp and surprised him. SBS reported that he learned of his win and the $250,000 prize during the reunion. He described the family impact simply: “$250K is life-changing for our family.”
