Wild in the Street and Madalenas Bar were both part of South Fremantle’s bar news in March 2022—but they were not two new venues opening at the same time. Wild in the Street was expected to open within weeks; Madalenas, already an established seafood restaurant, planned to add an upstairs rooftop bar. Those were forecasts reported then, not current opening announcements. Both businesses are listed on their official websites today.
What was announced in March 2022?
PerthNow reported on 31 March 2022 that Wild in the Street was expected to open in about two weeks. Madalenas planned to open its rooftop bar the following Friday. The article described the first as a new venue and the second as an addition to a restaurant that had been open for about three years at the time.
The distinction matters: the 2022 dates were plans reported at the time, not dates for a new opening in 2026. PerthNow’s opening-era report is the source for those forecasts and the concepts described below.

Wild in the Street: a neighborhood-inspired wood-fire concept
The 2022 report described Wild in the Street as owned by Beer Farm manager George Scott and La Cabana part-owner Ben Fossilo. Its site was reported to be about 100 metres from La Cabana. Fossilo said the design was meant to reflect the neighborhood: “We wanted to encompass all that makes South Fremantle what it is and share that with not just the locals but people everywhere.” He also described produce grown and sourced in Fremantle and food cooked in a wood-fire oven. These are opening-era descriptions, not necessarily a complete account of the venue’s current menu.

Madalenas: an upstairs bar added to a seafood restaurant
Madalenas was already operating as a seafood bar when the 2022 report covered its planned rooftop addition. The upstairs space was intended for parties, small bites and cocktails. The report quoted Adam Rees on bi-fold windows opening toward ocean views. The venue’s current site lists an upstairs bar, but its present layout and views should not be inferred from the earlier description alone.

What did local planning comments raise?
The City of Fremantle is named as the planning authority for a Section 40 small-bar application at 388 South Terrace by Wild in the Street Pty Ltd. Public submissions recorded on Planning Alerts raised concerns about noise, traffic and parking. Those are submitters’ concerns, not established council findings; the available record does not establish the council’s final determination.

PerthNow’s 2022 report also described pressure on parking along South Fremantle’s strip and said a residents-only parking proposal had been rejected at that month’s council meeting. Paid parking and additional CAT buses were mentioned as possibilities at the time. That report does not establish whether those ideas were later adopted or remain current.

In a report published on 26 November 2022 about the West Australian Good Food Guide’s 2023 awards, PerthNow named Madalenas’ Adam Rees Chef of the Year and Wild in the Street’s Elise Godwin Bartender of the Year. The same report said both venues appeared in the guide’s Top 100 bars and restaurants list. PerthNow’s awards coverage reported those results.
