Anupreeta Das’s Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest to Shape Our World asks how Bill Gates came to represent both technological power and large-scale philanthropy—and what those roles leave out. In a September 14, 2024, GeekWire interview with Ross Reynolds, Das described the book as an inquiry into Gates’s public persona and the influence of billionaires. Her central question: “Who is the real Bill Gates?”
What is the book about?
Das, identified by GeekWire as a New York Times journalist and South Asia correspondent, examines Gates across his roles as Microsoft co-founder, billionaire and philanthropist. The interview frames the book not simply as a profile of a prominent figure, but as an exploration of how public narratives about wealth, technology and charitable influence take shape.
Das told Reynolds that Gates’s public image has shifted from that of a hard-driving technology executive toward that of a benevolent philanthropist. She argues that his celebrity, visibility and charitable work can make criticism difficult. That is Das’s interpretation of the way Gates is perceived and discussed, not a finding about public opinion established by the interview.
Why did Das decide to write it?
Das said she began focusing on Gates after his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates brought renewed questions about his fortune and the Gates Foundation into view. She also said his connection to Jeffrey Epstein led her to ask who Gates was beyond the familiar identities of Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist.

That starting point gives the book a broad subject: the person behind a carefully recognized public image, and the ways wealth and philanthropy shape how influential people are viewed. The interview describes Das’s motivation; it does not independently verify the book’s wider claims.
How does Das question the “self-made” story?
In the interview, Das points to Gates’s family background and access when discussing the self-made-billionaire narrative. She says his mother was on the University of Washington board and his father was a prominent lawyer and community leader. These are details from Das’s account as reported by GeekWire, offered as context for her analysis rather than as a complete account of Gates’s upbringing or career.

What does the interview say about the Gates Foundation?
Das describes the foundation’s approach as data-driven: she says grantees report metrics and program assessments, requirements she argues can consume nonprofits’ time. The interview presents this as her interpretation and comparison of philanthropic practice, not an independent evaluation of the foundation or its results.
What is disputed about the book’s account of Epstein?
The interview discusses Gates’s association with Epstein and questions Das says remain unclear to her, including why Gates sought Epstein’s assistance and whether people around Gates advised him. Those are questions raised in the conversation, not established answers or proof of wrongdoing.

GeekWire also reported a statement from Gates’s representatives disputing the book’s sourcing and characterization. They said it relied almost exclusively on second- and third-hand hearsay and anonymous sources, and described it as containing sensationalized allegations and falsehoods. The interview therefore records both Das’s inquiry and the representatives’ response; it does not resolve the dispute.

The book’s central interest, as Das presents it, is the distance between familiar labels—technology executive, billionaire, philanthropist—and a more complicated account of the person and influence behind them. Readers should distinguish that stated aim and Das’s interpretations from independently established findings: GeekWire’s interview introduces the book and reports a response from Gates’s representatives, but it is not a full fact-check or independent assessment of every claim.
